Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone Offers To Step In And Save The UFC 234 Main Headliner Bout

UFC 234 was an attractive even with Whittaker facing Kelvin Gastelum for the middleweight title and Adesanya/Silva vying for the right to fight the victor, but Whittaker's exit has turned the event on its head.

The UFC will stage its first pay-per-view of 2019 from Australia, and fight fans at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne - home of the Australian Open - will see two massive middleweight matchups.

It is understood Whittaker started complaining to his coaching staff late on Saturday evening of pain in his abdomen.

The cancellation of the bout poses the question of whether or not Gastelum will get the first shot at Whittaker's belt when he returns from injury, with the victor of the fight between Adesanya and Silva guaranteed a title shot. The issue is not believed to be related to his weight cut.

Anderson Silva, a former UFC middleweight champion, and rising contender Israel Adesanya have been elevated into the main event role for the night.

What was your reaction to the news that Robert Whittaker had been forced out of the UFC 234 main event with an injury?

With next to no time to find a replacement for Whittaker all the way out in Australia, UFC 234 turned to its old superstar in Silva to headline the event.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the news to ESPN on Saturday.

Abdelaziz said White told him that the UFC will "take care" of Gastelum.
