Record US meth haul intercepted by Australian authorities

USA and Australian authorities have nabbed a record meth bust at a Los Angeles port - almost 2 tons of methamphetamine ready to be shipped overseas.

The drugs were hidden in metal boxes labelled as loudspeakers. The estimated street value of the meth was 1.29 billion AUD, or $911 million and was also the largest-ever shipment intended for Australia.

More than 1.7 tons of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin were discovered on January 11 concealed within a shipment of loud speakers on a ship at the Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport.

"There's no question that the criminal organization behind this scheme has been dealt a significant blow", Joseph Macias, special agent-in-charge for Homeland Security Investigations Los Angeles, said in a statement. Two other Australians face the same charge.

The investigation started between six and eight months ago, when a police officer pulled over a motor vehicle in country Victoria.

The bust was the largest amount of methamphetamine ever seized in the United States, according to police.

"This historic seizure highlights just how important the U.S".

Colombian and Mexican cartels have long looked to local partners to open new markets for their produce and shift legal risk.

Three of the people arrested will face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.

The Echo Task Force then continued to investigate the drug possession, and following this, police began to investigate the possible involvement of Australian gangs, which lead police to the discovery of the drugs and the arrests.
