Second Accuser Comes Forward Against Virginia Democrat Justin Fairfax

Virginia Blackface Scandal Ensnares Top State Republican

Virginia Blackface Scandal Ensnares Top State Republican

"It has been very hard to marshal the thoughts, let alone the words, to react", said the five lawmakers.

"The allegations against Justin Fairfax are serious and credible", McAuliffe tweeted.

Fairfax has denied both women's allegations.

Under state law, the lieutenant governor may be impeached by the House of Delegates and prosecuted before the Senate for malfeasance in office, corruption, neglect of duty, or other high crimes and misdemeanor.

In a second statement, Smith accused Fairfax of "smearing her with the typical "she's nuts" defense".

Should Cox be elevated to governor, Republican control in both houses of Virginia's legislature would extend to the state's executive branch in the run-up to the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

The new woman, Meredith Watson, put out a statement through an attorney. At least one of those friends has publicly corroborated her account, while others have reportedly provided statements. Watson says she was friends with Fairfax at Duke but they never had any romantic relationship, according to her lawyer.

"And in my remarks on Monday, I think you could hear how emotional dealing with an allegation that I know is not true has been for me", he said. He called the latest allegation "demonstrably false", and vowed he would not step down.

"I felt a responsibility to myself, the beloved students I teach, and the fearless women I've tried to help overcome their own trauma", she wrote. He has called for a "full investigation", saying, "I will clear my good name and I have nothing to hide".

Just days ago, Scripps College professor Vanessa Tyson released her own detailed account of an assault by Fairfax in a hotel room during the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston - a claim Fairfax also denies.

Smith concluded that "the smears on victims of sexual assault have to stop". Only then did I realize that he had unbuckled his belt, unzipped his trousers, and taken out his penis. "To be very clear, I did not want to engage in oral sex with Mr. Fairfax and I never gave any form of consent", Tyson said in the statement.

Virginia governor meets advisers as Democrats call for resignation amid blackface row
His rapid rise, including a stint as lieutenant governor, was powered more by his biography than political charisma or know-how. Northan denies being in the yearbook photo even though he had apologized for it Friday and said previously that he was in it.

Fairfax has vehemently denied that allegation as well.

The scandals have rattled the Democratic Party in a state where it has been gaining ground in recent years and that will play a key role in picking the victor of the 2020 presidential elections.

In her response, Tyson called Fairfax's attempts to discredit her "deceitful, offensive, and profoundly unsettling".

After Watson stepped forward, however, Booker ratcheted up his call. There's no question that Virginians' faith in their government and leaders has understandably been deeply shaken.

Col. Stewart MacInnis, VMI's director of communications, told The Virginia Pilot that he could not comment on "what was going through people's minds then, or why they thought this was appropriate".

"I believe Meredith Watson and Dr. Tyson, and it was extremely courageous for them to come forward", she said. "It is unacceptable that either of these weighty responsibilities be entrusted to someone who has engaged in the behavior described by Dr. Tyson and Meredith Watson, particularly in the light of Gov. Northam's situation, which we continue to believe requires his resignation". But former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is now calling on Fairfax to resign, as well.

Democratic 2020 presidential hopefuls echoed those calls.

"I believe Dr. Vanessa Tyson. My heart goes out to these courageous women and their families", Warren said on Twitter.

A conservative blog revealed last Friday that Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's page in a 1984 medical school yearbook depicted individuals in blackface and Ku Klux Klan garb.

The state's attorney general, who is after Fairfax in the line of succession for the governorship, has also admitted to wearing blackface when he was 19.
