Pelosi Stops Short of Endorsing Ocasio-Cortez’s ‘Green New Deal’

Ocasio-Cortez Seeks More Co-Sponsors As the Introduction of Green New Deal Legislation Approaches

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is set to release her much-touted Green New Deal on Thursday - a package of far-reaching, big-government proposals like health care for all, federal job guarantees and a push to eliminate USA carbon emissions - but it's already receiving shade from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Pelosi announced the plan to form the select committee last November on the same day that the newly elected Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives protested outside of the leader's personal office in Cannon - an early effort in their push for the Green New Deal.

The proposal has no chance of gaining support in the Republican-controlled Senate, let alone being signed into law by President Donald Trump, but has become a rallying cry among some liberals and a lightning rod among conservatives.

Adam Shaw is a reporter covering US and European politics for Fox News. Pelosi also named her Democratic members who will be on the Select Committee on Climate Crisis, with Ocasio-Cortez's name noticeably absent. She said she doesn't "consider that to be a dismissive term".

Maybe Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will have to be satisfied being merely green with envy. Ed Markey, D-Mass., who is co-sponsoring the resolution with freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York.

Although Pelosi has experience as speaker pushing climate change policies under previous administrations, more progressive members have questioned her eagerness to support an ambitious new climate proposal.

The legislation is already backed by more than 40 House Democrats, Bloomberg reports, including House Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern.

Muslims In The Middle East Urged To 'Embrace' Christians
He has used the visit to condemn regional wars, including in Yemen, where the UAE makes up part of a Saudi-led military coalition. Pope Francis spoke alongside Sheik Ashamed el-Tayeb, the grand imam of Egypt's Al-Azhar, the 1,000 year old seat of Sunni Islam.

The announcement of the Green New Deal came as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tapped eight Democrats to serve on a special committee to address climate change.

The plan goes far beyond energy to urge national health care coverage and job guarantees, as well as high-quality education and affordable housing.

Trump, who has expressed doubts about climate change, scrapped Obama's plan as a job killer.

She also cites Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society and the interstate highway system begun under Dwight D. Eisenhower as examples of American know-how and capability. The long and short of it: we have a very limited amount of time to slow global warming, for which the USA has "historically been responsible for a disproportionate amount of greenhouse gas emissions".

While Democrats did not specify a price tag, some Republicans predict it would cost in the trillions of dollars.

While focusing on renewable energy, Ocasio-Cortez said the plan would include existing nuclear power plants but block new nuclear plants. They denounced the plan at House hearings on climate change on Wednesday.

The resolution paints a grim view of present-day America, saying it is "experiencing several related crises" including declining life expectancy, economic stagnation, erosion of worker bargaining power, increasing income inequality and the exacerbation of "systemic racial, regional, social, environmental and economic injustices".
