Trump calls on divided Congress to end 'political stalemate'

The change in the Capitol was on display as Pelosi and scores of House Democratic women wore white, the color of the suffrage movement, reflecting the fact that 131 women were sworn into the new Congress, the most in American history. Which sounds great, but is ultimately empty rhetoric when coming from the man who, in the same speech, spoke of a nonexistent "tremendous onslaught" of undocumented immigrants, spoke of Virginia's Democrat governor as supporting the "execution" of babies, and essentially said the Mueller investigation is the biggest threat to the American economy.

"I was glad that President Trump touched on a number of issues where we can find agreement, like investing in rural infrastructure, paid family leave, and lowering prices for prescription drugs". The president stressed that many women attempting to cross into the US illegally get sexually assaulted during the journey.

Regardless, Trump delivered a stark warning to Democrats such as Pelosi who have said they will push to hold his administration accountable: Back off, or I won't work with you. In Trump's case, he opened this period of partisan power sharing with a relentless confrontation over his proposed border wall, resulting in a record-breaking 35-day partial government shutdown.

White has continued to serve as symbol for women in politics.

After delivering the text version of his speech to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) and Vice President Mike Pence, Trump turned around, thanked the crowd, and then set about his speech. Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey. Many expressed excitement on Twitter about her speech.

In her speech, Abrams made it personal, too.

In excerpts released ahead of Abrams' remarks, she calls the shutdown a political stunt that "defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people, but our values".

Blazers acquire Hood from Cavs for Stauskas, Baldwin, picks
Baldwin, 22, was selected 17th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2016 out of Vanderbilt, but has just one career start. Cleveland has added seven draft picks this season in deals for Hood, Kyle Korver , Sam Dekker and George Hill .

Trump's address amounted to an opening argument for his re-election campaign.

"Don't sit yet. You're going to like this", Trump countered.

This isn't the first time Democratic women have signaled their solidarity from the audience of one of President Trump's speeches.

The president said it was time for USA troops in Syria to return home - but did not repeat a timescale for withdrawal, which in December he said would be immediate.

"My family understood firsthand that while success is not guaranteed, we live in a nation where opportunity is possible", she said.

With another shutdown looming next week unless Trump can strike a deal with Democrats over his proposed border wall, the president shied away from calling a national emergency to build the wall. Several leading GOP lawmakers have sharply criticized his plans to withdraw from Syria, as well as from Afghanistan. "Donald Trump apparently supports crony capitalism".
