Despite shutdown, U.S. employers add robust 304K jobs in January

The US economy added 304,000 jobs in January a surprisingly strong month

United States job creation had another blockbuster month in January, blowing past the government shutdown, but that disruption helped to push the unemployment rate higher, the Labor Department reported Friday.

The goods producing industry added 72,000 net new jobs, the most since February 2018, fueled by a 52,000 increase in construction employment. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal and the Dow Jones both had expected an increase of 170,000. The increase is at least partially attributable to furloughed workers forced to sit at home during the shutdown; the Labor Department said it counted those workers as unemployed or on temporary layoff because they were not working during the week of January 6-12, the reference period for the statistics.

The positive payroll numbers were somewhat mediated by revisions to previous months that shaved off 70,000 jobs. Average hourly earnings grew 3.2 percent over the past 12 months - matching December's increase.

The numbers released Friday by the Department of Labor represent the largest monthly jobs increase in almost a year and continue a long running trend of 100 consecutive months of growth. Wages have risen by 3.2 percent since this time past year.

Most sectors of the economy reported solid hiring gains in January. Since President Trump was elected in November 2016, the US economy has created over 5 million jobs. It didn't affect the numbers because of some technicalities of who the government considered unemployed in January.

The quadruple? That's fantasy, says City boss Guardiola
The Premier League champions breezed past Burnley at the Etihad Stadium in the FA Cup with an emphatic 5-0 win over the visitors. If you believe it's a handicap, that's a big mistake. 'When you are 35 years old you can have long , long holidays, no problem.

The partial government shutdown that ended last Friday, which was the longest on record, may have had a slight impact on the report. The Labor Department still counted them as employed since the workers were going to be paid eventually. The unemployment rate on the household survey will likely tick up in January due to the shutdown. Notable gains occurred in the retail sector (21,000), transportation and warehousing (27,000), and education and health services (55,000).

"So, what we'll say if we were to see that negative number is, 'Well, sure it was negative this, but if you adjust for the furlough, it looks like another plus-200 month, '" Council of Economic Advisers chairman Kevin Hassett told reporters last month.

January was the 100th straight month of job gains.

That increased the size of the labor force, driving the closely watched labor force participation rate up to 63.2 percent, its highest level in more than five years. The wage number is long overdue, and the jobs number continues to outpace the underlying demography. Job growth around 120,000 is more than enough to keep the unemployment rate under 4%.
