Democratic presidential candidate Kamala (KAH'mah-lah) Harris says she's the kind of leader who can unify the country and would fight for the needs of all Americans.

Harris joins early Democratic contenders including former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, Maryland's John Delaney, Hawaii's Tulsi Gabbard and NY senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

During CNN's live broadcast from Drake University in Des Moines, Harris spoke from a stage in front of a friendly audience of Iowans who said they plan to take part in the Democratic caucuses a little more than a year from now. Trump can beat her. We know it ended a little short for him. What's next? What industry are we going to abolish next?

"They're serving in our military, they are living productive lives, and this administration has chose to vilify them and to trade on them for the sake of this president's medieval vanity project called a wall", she said. As for the NRA, which awards her a 7 percent rating, she acknowledged that its influence was "real" but also suggested that its power has been overstated, making the organization a "paper tiger".

She also gets a boost from having California as her home state. Her campaign reported raising $1.5 million from roughly 38,000 donors during the first 24 hours after she announced her campaign on January 21.

That said, she also maintained record-high conviction rates as district attorney, and maintained most status quo positions on issues of over-incarceration and the death penalty. Should he lose to someone more in line with the base - a Warren or a Sanders or a Harris - Democrats may face the possibility that Trump's popularity ratings matter less to the general public than Democrats' extremism.

Follow Blackhawks Crazy on Facebook for everything Blackhawks! "When she took off, I was like "Wow", McDavid said. I would contend that this entirely tone deaf "well actually" on behalf of the league only makes it look worse.

Complicating the launch, billionaire former Starbucks chief executive Howard Schultz said hours after her announcement that he is seriously considering entering the race - as an independent.

"And we will deliver that right with Medicare for All", Harris said during her speech in Oakland, California. She's a former prosecutor and served as California's first female attorney general from 2011 to 2017. Mixed in with her promises of boilerplate progressive agenda items like Medicare for all, debt-free college and middle-class tax cuts, Harris speaks most passionately about "Our America".

Civil rights advocate Lateefah Simon responded: "(Ms Harris) became a prosecutor to give the job a perspective it had sorely lacked: "a voice for the voiceless and vulnerable.

"I respect the Democratic Party", he said.

Harris rarely mentioned Trump by name, but he was clearly a target. But Harris' record is one both of steps forward and backward; as she moves forward in pursuit of the Oval Office, her efforts to connect with black voters - and black voters' rightful attempts to hold her accountable for her previous actions - could hold the key to her political future. She certainly looks tough enough so far.
