Vodafone Group, which has a majority share in Vodacom, is suspending certain equipment purchases from Huawei in "another setback for the Chinese technology giant's growth ambitions".

Polish government officials are talking to European Union and North American allies on the next steps but haven't determined which telecoms equipment maker might replace Huawei, the sources said.

Chief executive Nick Read said the company would temporarily stop the installation of new Huawei equipment in its core telecoms infrastructure in Europe.

Huawei had already seen the arrest of the daughter of the firm's founder in and USA efforts to blacklist the company internationally over security concerns.

Huawei overtook Sweden's Ericsson to become the world's biggest telecoms equipment maker earlier this decade, despite being shut out of the US market.

BEIJING-Chinese tech giant Huawei announced plans Wednesday to release a next-generation smartphone based on its own technology instead of USA components, stepping up efforts to compete with Western industry leaders in the face of Washington's warnings the company might be a security risk. The vendor already faces bans in the U.S., Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Huawei began rolling out commercial 5G networks in 2018.

"We are grateful to Vodafone for its support of Huawei and we will endeavour to live up to the trust placed in us". "His alleged actions have no relation to the company", Huawei said in a statement to AFP.

Yesterday, a spokesman for Siro said it had raised the issue of security with Huawei but that the partnership agreement remains in place.

"Huawei's prospects in [central and eastern] Europe are still positive following the arrest", said Kenny Liew, a Singapore-based TMT analyst at Fitch Solutions.

The release comes amid increased worldwide scrutiny of Huawei's equipment over espionage concerns, resulting in higher barriers for the company in the global market.

Mr Read also warned of higher costs and delays to the rollout of 5G if an European Union ban on the firm's equipment comes into force. But the country's IT watchdog says it had seen no evidence Huawei could use its equipment to spy for Beijing. Ericsson posted a 30 percent increase in sales for the fourth quarter in northeast Asia, which includes China.

The company is also expected to build a new science and technology centre near Warsaw.
