China population growth continued to slow in 2018

Chinas economy grew at slowest pace in 28 years in 2018

Chinas economy grew at slowest pace in 28 years in 2018

The figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said the low birth rates coupled with the slowdown of the Chinese economy raised concerns as the country faced demographic crisis with the population of above 60 years making 249 million, accounting for nearly 18 per cent of the total population.

The yuan CNY=CFXS has retreated to the weaker side of 6.8 per dollar this week, but is still up almost 3 percent since early December on hopes that Washington and Beijing may be inching toward a trade deal. This figure is the lowest since the first quarter of 2009. China is the world's largest auto market and sales fell previous year for the first time since 1991, contracting by 4 percent.

China added more than 17 million people to its population in 2016 and 2017 following the scrapping of the one-child policy, but the effect hasn't endured.

There are also many doubts about the consistency and veracity of Chinese statistics, given that the governments of many provinces tend to inflate results.

"We have confidence that China's economy will maintain a reasonable growth rate in 2019", Ning Jizhe, head of the NBS, was quoted as saying by the Global Times. The speech by Xiang Songzuo, which AsiaNews will publish in the next few hours, has been censored on the internet.

But observers say the US-China trade war is now hitting consumer sentiment, as well as capital spending. "That was a decline from the 6.5 percent year-over-year growth in the third quarter of 2018", adds the article.

The world's second largest economy grew by 6.6% in 2018 - the weakest reported annual rate since 1990. "Consumers are [already] feeling uncertain about next year, so they are going to pull back".

Ant McPartlin set to return to work on Friday
The simple snap showed the best friends and colleagues smiling as they sat in the back of their chauffeured vehicle . Ant said: "Hello everyone". "I thought do you know what I would actually rather watch a show about a singing dog".

Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping told the same story at a political function in Beijing on Monday, ostentatiously telling top officials to focus on "defusing major risks to ensure sustained and healthy economic development and social stability", as the state-run Xinhua news service put it.

Gross domestic product (GDP) totaled 90.0309 trillion yuan (about 13.28 trillion USA dollars) in 2018, with the service sector accounting for more than half of the total.

Some factories in Guangdong, at the heart of China's export economy, have shut earlier than usual ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.

International Monetary Fund chief economist Gita Gopinath said that while the downward revisions were modest, "we believe the risks to more significant downward corrections are rising".

Some China watchers believe actual growth is already weaker than official data suggest.

"The number of newborns will continue plunging even after the country completely revoked its birth policy, unless the Chinese leadership made great efforts to boost births such as lowering the cost of education significantly", said Huang Wenzheng, co-founder of Cnpop.org, a non-profit organisation analysing China's population and birth policies.

The state-run Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has projected that the population could start shrinking from 2027 - three years earlier than expected - if the birth rate held steady at 1.6 children per woman. Its total population stood at 1.362 billion this month based on United Nations estimates.
