Ford will design and build the pickups for the companies.

But Hackett said Ford would not leave Europe as General Motors did in 2017, when it sold Opel and Vauxhall to PSA Group, owners of Peugeot and Citroën. This committee will be led by Hackett and Diess and will include senior executives from both companies, the automakers said.

Both parties are open to further vehicle programmes in the future, and more details are being worked on, according to both companies.

The commercial-vehicle alliance may do more for VW than Ford, as it fills two weaknesses in the German automaker's commercial lineup - pickups and delivery vans - that are already areas of strength for Ford, Jefferies analyst Philippe Houchois wrote to investors. In the commercial vehicle sector, the products include ranges from pick-ups, buses and heavy trucks.

In addition, Volkswagen and Ford have signed a memorandum of understanding to investigate collaboration on autonomous vehicles, mobility services and electric vehicles and have started to explore opportunities.

VW will build a new compact van to replace both the VW Caddy and the Transit Connect at VW's plant in Poland, where the automaker produces the Crafter large van, Handelsblatt reported.

The two companies have been transparent about their talks, which began early previous year.

"Cutting costs by sharing vehicle architectures and manufacturing facilities is just table stakes in this new world and is a nice place to start", Caldwell said. They will be making Electric Cars.

We needed to attack on the opposite side, that's what we did and we scored a goal. We were all determined and wanted to win this game.

Volkswagen CEO Diess said that while Volkswagen is generally highly competitive it lacks volume in light trucks and midsize pickups.

The deal does not involve cross-ownership, the companies said in a statement.

Among the discussions, was a potential collaboration in China on electric drivetrains. The passenger van collaboration, which saw all three models produced in Portugal, allowed Ford to market a minivan more suited to European tastes, but none of the three were sold in North America per the agreement so as not to compete with Ford and Mercury's American-market minivans.

The expanding alliance will also highlight the pressure on global automobile manufacturers to manage the costs of developing electric and self-driving vehicles, as well as technology required to meet tougher emission standards for the internal combustion vehicles.

Revealed late previous year, VW's invested enormously in its new MEB electric vehicle platform, which features an adjustable wheelbase and two working grades: one for passenger cars and the other for vehicles required to haul loads.

That move won the praises from U.S. President Donald Trump, who tweeted Tuesday morning: "Congratulations to Chattanooga and Tennessee on a job well done".

"The problem is, there's never a ninth inning because this business keeps reinventing itself", Bill Ford said Monday.

The partnership was given a soft launch at the Detroit Motor Show in the U.S., just 24 hours after VW delighted Donald Trump with the announcement of 1,000 new electric vehicle jobs at its plant in Tennessee.
