In the days after President Donald Trump fired James Comey as FBI director, law enforcement officials became so concerned by the president's behavior that they began investigating whether he had been working on behalf of Russian Federation against American interests, according to former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation. They also wanted to determine whether the president "was knowingly working for Russian Federation or had unwittingly fallen under Moscow's influence".

In an interview with The Hill published Friday, Giuliani expressed his disdain with Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his worry that the report might reflect badly on his client, President Donald Trump.

According to former law-enforcement officials and others familiar with the probe, the newspaper said, counterintelligence agents had to decide whether Trump's actions posed a possible national security threat. "Campaigns leak polling data all the time", Giuliani said, before decrying the focus on the investigation as a "joke" and "total mockery" that "only happens because 75 percent of the press hates Trump".

Giuliani, a lawyer for the president, was quoted by the Times as saying that the investigation seems to have gone nowhere.

The White House and Federal Bureau of Investigation did not immediately return requests for comment from The Hill on Friday night.

However, this is not the first time he's threatened to pull funding from California over the fires , during one of the deadliest seasons on record.

During the campaign, FBI officials were troubled by Trump's ties to Russia, and opened an investigation into the campaign in August 2016, two months after the Trump Tower meeting between campaign senior officials and Russian surrogates.

"The fact that it goes back a year and a half and nothing came of it that showed a breach of national security means they found nothing", Rudy Giuliani told the Times, while also acknowledging that he didn't have insight into the investigation.

Mueller took over the FBI's counter-intelligence investigation after being appointed, The New York Times reported, just days after it was first opened.

CNN reported that counterintelligence agents were investigating why Trump was acting in ways that seemed to benefit Russian Federation.

But it held off on opening an investigation until the president sacked Comey, who refused to swear his allegiance and roll back the nascent Russian Federation investigation, which is now being spearheaded by Mueller.
