Turkey Stands By Deal To Buy Russian Missiles, Attack Kurds In Syria

The administration's strategy toward Syria has appeared muddled since Trump's abrupt announcement last month of a USA exit, a statement that included no details but sparked the resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the top American envoy to the global coalition to defeat Islamic State.

Confirmation of the first withdrawals comes amid confusion over plans to implement Trump's pullout order and threats from Turkey to attack the Kurds, who have been America's partners on the ground in the war against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in Syria.

Col Sean Ryan told Agence France-Presse in a statement: "Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve has begun the process of our deliberate withdrawal from Syria". "Out of concern for operational security, we will not discuss specific timelines, locations or troops movements", Ryan said.

"This is the first such pullout of American forces since the United States president's announcement" of a full troop withdrawal from Syria last month, he said.

A senior Kurdish politician said the Kurds are aware of the US beginning its withdraw process, describing it as "America's decision".
