After only a week in Cleveland, McCaw was waived before his contract was guaranteed.

The Warriors ultimately declined to match the offer sheet McCaw signed with Cleveland.

In December, after he had held out for half the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers extended an offer sheet to McCaw.

After waiving McCaw, the Cavs, who are now dealing with several injuries, went out and signed point guard Cameron Payne to shore up their ranks at the point guard position.

Patrick McCaw's story has been one of the weirdest in recent National Basketball Association memory. He was then traded to the Golden State Warriors, where he played for two seasons and won a couple of championships.

If he helps them, great. It's expected to be a one-year, veteran's minimum deal at $786,000. The contract was for two years and $6 million, but the Cavs gave themselves an out and waived McCaw after just three games. In essence, the Cavs would be helping McCaw escape restricted free agency.

McCaw was sidelined for nearly two months with a bone bruise in his lower back near the end of last season after a horrific fall during a game at Sacramento. Golden State could've matched.

The Milwaukee Bucks drafted McCaw with the 38th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. There is precedent for this, as back in 2000, the Minnesota Timberwolves lost five first-round picks due to their negotiations with free agent Joe Smith.

McCaw cleared waivers on Wednesday afternoon, sources said.

As the Cavs were losing yet another game Tuesday night, Cavs fans everywhere started freaking out over the notion that the team might lose a first-round pick.

The Cavs released McCaw before his deal became fully guaranteed.
