"A typical pattern would be you have a subscriber that is simultaneously watching content on the East Coast and West Coast of the U.S.", chief technology officer Jean-Marc Racine told The Verge.

Password sharing is, of course, pretty common.

But new software unveiled at the CES tech show in Las Vegas could crack down on such account sharing. It's there when you need it. but it might not be there for much longer.

The system uses machine learning to analyse account activity and recognise unusual patterns, such as account details being used in two locations within similar time periods.

One survey found that 26 percent of millennials use the password from someone else's account to watch shows on an online streaming service. It could be family, friends, your significant other or just about anyone in between.

But it is no secret that many users of the service share their password with family, friends or significant others so they can indulge in Netflix's deluge of content.

And research indicates that undocumented immigrants are much less likely to commit crime than native-born American citizens. The number of illegal border crossings is down from 1.6 million in 2000 to less than 400,000 previous year .

It is unclear how or if Netflix would use the service.

However, with the content transitioning to streaming, operators are finding ways to make things simpler for end consumers.

Meanwhile Parks Associates predicts that by 2021, $9.9billion of pay-tv revenues and $1.2billion of streaming revenues will be lost to password sharing.

The company is billing Credentials Sharing Insight as a new revenue-generating option for streaming service companies as it is a "way to market their service to new audiences". With this data, streaming companies would try to persuade users who are most likely sharing their passwords to purchase subscriptions with additional simultaneous streams.

Jean Marc Racine, Chief Product Officer at Synamedia, said: "Casual credentials sharing is becoming too expensive to ignore".
