Trump and top lawmakers fail to resolve shutdown after meeting

President Donald Trump told a group of lawmakers he can't accept Democrats' offer to re-open the government as the two sides negotiate border wall funding because he "would look foolish if I did that", according to a person familiar with the exchange. NBC's Savannah Guthrie asked Pelosi in an interview slated to air in full Thursday.

Schumer said he implored Trump to reopen the government while they debated their differences over the border wall.

"This is all to tell Chuck and Nancy and some others from ICE and from border patrol, and also from some local law enforcement, how bad it is - how risky it is - and why we need a wall", Trump said.

"We have given the Republicans a chance to take "yes" for an answer", incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said after the meeting.

"Could be a long time or could be quickly", Trump said during lengthy comments at a Cabinet meeting at the White House, his first public appearance of the new year. "Nothing for the wall".

Pelosi, who is expected to become speaker on Thursday, said Tuesday that Democrats would take action to "end the Trump Shutdown" by passing legislation Thursday to reopen government.

The partial government shutdown began on December 22 after Trump refused to sign a budget deal that didn't include billions of dollars for his long-promised and long-stalled southern border wall. Trump could actually make this worse by offering something like a DACA deal and daring Democrats to reject it.

A partial government shutdown showed no signs of ending Wednesday as congressional leaders left what appeared to be an unproductive meeting with President Trump. "Just the first sign of things to come in our new Democratic Majority committed to working #ForThePeople". "Now's the time to come together, find common ground and solve this problem", McCarthy said.

Trump made the border wall a key part of his presidential campaign and tried again to make a case for it shortly before lawmakers arrived for the afternoon briefing.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and top House Republicans Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and Steve Scalise, R-La., attended the meeting in the high-security enclave of the White House, which typically is used to handle sensitive information. "We are in a crisis situation, '" one of the officials said, relaying Nielsen's remarks, which were aimed at the Democratic leaders in attendance. More important, what extra money does come in will be from tariffs, which are paid by people in the USA, not Mexico.

He has since blamed Democrats for the shutdown. Democrats intend to introduce a pair of funding bills that would end the shutdown, but without federal funding for a border wall. One measure would open most of the shuttered government departments at funding levels already agreed to by all sides. "And I think at the end of the day, the president, listening to him, he wants to solve this as well", McCarthy said.

"They are now feeling the heat", Schumer said.

Meanwhile, the effects of the partial government shutdown are becoming more apparent. Major agencies like the Pentagon and the Health and Human Services Department have already been funded through the end of the fiscal year September 30, thanks to spending bills passed by Congress earlier last year.

Pelosi is proposing a budget that would fund most government agencies through September 30 with the exception of the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees border security and would only receive funding through February 8.
