He said: "The reasons behind the increased crossings are complicated and in many cases outside of our control".

Sajid Javid is returning to the United Kingdom later today after cutting a family holiday short to tackle the crisis of migrants attempting to cross the English Channel.

It's thought the plan will involve action targeting people trafficking gangs, and to raise awareness among migrants of the potential dangers.

"This can not be done on the cheap with the half-hearted Dad's Army-type set-up suggested by the Home Office in the past".

Some MPs - including Conservative backbenchers - have criticised a lack of detail, as well as calling for more Border Force patrol boats to be deployed.

The two European countries "are coordinating to strengthen our actions to combat Channel crossings undertaken by certain irregular migrants on small boats, at peril of their lives", Castaner wrote on Twitter.

Javid added that journeys are being fuelled by instability in the Middle East, organised crime and tighter security at Calais, adding: "Unfortunately there are no easy answers".

"What we want to make sure is that we continue to work with the French so that people are prevented from leaving beaches in northern France; to make sure we are providing joint operations both in terms of intelligence (and) policing; and indeed when people are out on the water assisting the French response".

A group of migrants has been detained close to a Kent beach after they are understood to have crossed the English Channel in an inflatable boat.

But shortly after being detained by USA border agents, she developed a high fever and died of shock from sepsis on December 8. The father and son were not identified, and the agency said it will release more details "as available and appropriate".

Their attempts are not unique - the number of migrants attempting to reach the United Kingdom by boat has grown over the past several months.

Dover MP Charlie Elphicke called for more patrol boats and accused the Home Office of letting the "crisis" escalate.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has said the UK's armed forces "stand ready" if needed to prevent further crossings.

The governments of France and Britain scrambled to respond Sunday to a mounting number of migrants attempting to cross the English Channel, a trend illustrated by six Iranian men who turned up on a beach in southeastern England.

The National Crime Agency said that tackling the criminals behind these "extremely dangerous" attempted crossings was an "operational priority" and significant resources were devoted to them.

Mr Javid appeared before the Home Affairs Committee in November when he was asked about the measures being taken to stem the number of migrants attempting the crossing.

In 2017, 26,350 people applied for asylum, an average of about 2,200 a month.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for a more welcoming approach, tweeting: "We have a duty to reach out the hand of humanity, support and friendship to people who are in danger and seeking a place of safety".
