Gatwick Airport shuts over drone fears - ITV News

Gatwick is the eighth-busiest airport in Europe and sits behind Mumbai as the world's busiest single-runway air hub.

There were multiple reports of drone sightings since the initial report of two drones at 9.03pm local time on Wednesday (Thursday 5.03am, Singapore time), Gatwick said in an earlier statement.

The Christmas getaway was disrupted at Gatwick Airport when flights were suspended last night after two drones were reportedly spotted flying over the airfield.

Some people reported being left stuck on planes for several hours while they waited to find out what was going on.

Gatwick announced that the runway had reopened at about 3am on Thursday - but just 45 minutes later it was shut again.

Gatwick added that airlines had been working to provide delayed and diverted passenger with hotel accommodation or transport.

"We apologise to any affected passengers for this inconvenience but the safety is our foremost priority", it added.

According to Flight Radar, more than two dozen flights bound for Gatwick had been diverted by 11pm.

British Airways confirmed that "Gatwick have stopped all arrivals and departures due to a drone".

One tweeter said: "Dear @British_Airways thanks for diverting our plan to Stansted and now Heathrow (even though we were meant to land at Gatwick) and now you're not even letting us off the plane".

Inbound flights are being diverted to other airports while passengers who are due to travel from the airport have been told to check with their airline before setting out.
