Ohio State coach Urban Meyer retires, led Florida to two national championships

Ohio State University football coach Urban Meyer to announce retirement

Ohio State University football coach Urban Meyer to announce retirement

A year ago anyone suggesting that in 365 days Urban Meyer would retire as Ohio State's football coach and be replaced by a 39-year-old assistant coach with three games of experience as a head coach would have been called insane and possibly drug tested. You could argue that his responses were hard to interpret. But on the day Urban Meyer supposedly retired, the first thought that crossed everybody's mind was, "Yeah, right".

Late last month, it was reported that Urban Meyer would address his coaching future following the Big Ten championship game.

Meyer won two national championships with the Florida Gators before taking the head coaching spot in Columbus ahead of the 2012 season. He is an Ohio State guy. From Utah to Florida and finally with Ohio State, Meyer displayed a level of excellence and consistency that can only be matched by Saban.

His Buckeyes finished sixth in the final College Football Playoff rankings and were in contention for one of the four semifinal spots.

A news conference was scheduled for today during which Meyer is to announce his retirement, with co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day appointed the team's 25th head coach. "To finish that last game the way they did [a victory over Northwestern in the Big Ten championship] is pretty impressive".

Meyer guided Ohio State to the national championship in 2014 after doing so at Florida in 2006 and 2008.

Smith was a sophomore football player at Notre Dame when Ara Parseghian left coaching at the age of 51 and never returned. "I'll visit with recruits on campus, and then I'll have conversations with them if they feel necessary because I'm still really close with that (2019) class".

David Mulroney, a former Canadian ambassador to China , said US and Canadian business executives could face reprisals in China. BT is also removing Huawei equipment from the core of its existing 3G and 4G networks, the BBC reported.

In his 17 seasons as a head coach, Meyer compiled a 186-32 record.

Ohio State might also have to replace Dwayne Haskins next season, which would have made a win at the Big House even less likely.

Meyer previously stepped down as head coach at Florida for health reasons.

"This will keep me healthier than not, because I'll have to get back in better shape, and I'll have something to do every morning", he said.

Amid the scrutiny on Meyer's program, it also emerged that Zach Smith's treatment of his wife had drawn police scrutiny almost 10 years ago - shortly after Meyer first took him on as a graduate assistant at the University of Florida. That was thanks in large part to Haskins, who completed 70.2% of his passes (348 of 496) on the year, throwing for 4,580 yards, 47 touchdowns and just eight interceptions-in just his first season of appreciable playing time.

His contract was extended in April by two years through 2022, increasing Meyer's salary to $7.6 million in 2018 with annual 6 percent raises.
