Body of George H.W. Bush arrives in Maryland ahead of state funeral

Ordinary Americans, generals, and former Cabinet members paid respects at the US Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday to the late US President George H.W. Bush, who died last week at the age of 94 after a life of service as a World War Two hero, head of the Central Intelligence Agency and wartime president.

Sully, who had been in the former President's service since early this year, was assigned to him in his last days in a wheelchair. They exited the rotunda with little fanfare.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath said the flights to carry Bush are being dubbed "Special Air Mission 41". The Trumps visited Bush's casket Monday evening. Wrote another, "Truly a lovely and heartbreaking moment".

Shortly before leaving the service, he married 19-year-old Barbara Pierce, and forged the longest presidential marriage in United States history.

The remains will then be transported by train for interment on the grounds of the George Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.

Bush also served as vice president for two terms under President Ronald Reagan.

Military pallbearers carried the flag-draped casket into the rotunda as a fiery sunset bathed Washington in a glow.

George HW Bush was remembered just feet away from what he called "Democracy's front porch", the west-facing steps of the Capitol where he was sworn in as president.

The G20 Summit: Key meetings and moments
The US president cancelled a formal sit-down with Mr Putin at the summit in Argentina over Moscow's seizure of Ukrainian vessels. In the video, the Saudi prince can be heard telling the French president "Don't worry", to which he replies, "I am anxious ".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., talked of Bush's days as a Navy pilot, when on September 2, 1944, the then 20-year-old lieutenant saw his plane hit on a bombing mission. "He kept us flying high and challenged us to fly higher still".

Bush's casket is set to arrive in Washington on Monday afternoon aboard the USA military airplane that's more commonly recognized as Air Force One.

Bush's coffin will arrive today in Washington, DC, where he will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda until Wednesday morning. He says the former president was very authentic and put people at ease.

The public are permitted to pay their respects in the Capitol from late Monday until Wednesday. Bush sent a signed photograph and letter. Postal Service said it will suspend regular mail delivery Wednesday out of respect for Bush.

Bill Clinton will be among the living United States presidents to attend, along with dozens of foreign leaders including Germany's Angela Merkel.

During this service Bush's grandson George P. Bush will speak as will Bush's best friend, James Baker, Bush's chief of staff and Secretary of State and Secretary of the Treasury.

"His life was a hymn of honour", Paul Ryan, whose time as Speaker of the House of Representatives ends on January 3, said of Bush 41, as Bush 43 and the rest of the Kennebunkport clan sat in grim, evident sadness. The US economy slid into recession in 1990, and recovery was sluggish, conditions which contributed to his 1992 election defeat by Clinton.

"His character was second to none", said outgoing House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.
