Israel denies one of its fighter jets was downed

Syria's state news agency SANA said the Syrian military repelled the attack "despite its intensity".

Syrian air defences responded on Thursday evening to a suspected Israeli missile attack on military targets in southern Syria, media reported.

Possible #Israel strikes south of #Damascus, as #Assad regime reports activating air-defenses around al-Kiswah & "downing" multiple objects.

"At this point, it remains unclear if the launch indeed landed in Israeli territory", it said, adding that Israeli troops were searching the area for possible remnants of the missile.

Two missiles hit "weapons depots belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah [group] as well as Iranian forces" in Kisweh, the Observatory said, while another missile hit the area of Harfa, where there is a Syrian military base.

"Furthermore, the report about a strike on an Israeli aircraft or an Israeli aerial target are bogus", said the statement.

The latest attack on Al-Kiswah took place in April, when Syrian air defense crews downed 13 missiles.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu 'should be charged' in third corruption case
They also recommended his wife, Sara Netanyahu , face charges of bribery, fraud, breach of trust and obstruction of evidence. Other opposition figures, including opposition leader Tzipi Livni, quickly joined in the call for Netanyahu to resign.

The Israeli warplanes hit Thursday night Kisweh, near the Syrian capital.

Hitting nothing was still enough for Israel to spend a solid hour striking targets around south Syria and metro Damascus.

Moscow pinned responsibility for the downing on Israel, saying its fighter jet used the larger Russian one for cover, an allegation Israel disputed.

Iran and Russian Federation are the government's key allies in the civil war that has raved Syria since 2011, and Moscow's intervention in 2015 dramatically turned the tables against the rebels.

After the September attack, during which Russian servicemen were killed by friendly fire, Moscow was quick to equip Damascus with the S-300 air defence missile system.

In recent years, Israel has acknowledged conducting hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, which it says were aimed at both preventing Iran from establishing a permanent military presence in Syria and blocking the transfer of advanced munitions to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
