Saudi Crown Prince receives 'firm message' on Khashoggi probe at G20 summit

Saudi Crown Prince receives 'firm message' on Khashoggi probe at G20 summit

Khashoggi, a Post columnist, had gone to the consulate to obtain documents necessary to marry his Turkish fiancee.

In the video, the Saudi prince can be heard telling the French president "Don't worry", to which he replies, "I am anxious".

Given the grave nature of these accusations, and the horrific claims surrounding the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi embassy in Istanbul, how can the heads of state pictured below meet so proudly, so gratuitously, so gleefully with Mohammed bin Salman?

Meanwhile Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prince Mohammed shared a smiley, enthusiastic greeting at the gathering.

Saudi Arabia has promised to get to the bottom of what happened but the West has accused Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as MBS, of ordering the killing.

Less than two months after Saudi Arabia outraged allies when a hit team murdered Jamal Khashoggi in the kingdom's Istanbul consulate, Prince Mohammed flew into Buenos Aires to take his place among leaders of the top 20 global economies, a sign that he intends to remain firmly in charge.

French President Emmanuel Macron has told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that Europe will insist on worldwide experts being part of the investigation into the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. "No I will listen of course", bin Salman said in English, then bursting into a laugh.

Trump, in an exclamation point-heavy statement before the summit, said it did not matter whether Prince Mohammed knew about Khashoggi's death and that Saudi Arabia was important for business and for its hostility to Iran.

Macron's office said the meeting with MbS [was] justified because European nations wanted to send a united message about the need for probity in the investigation and were not going to sidestep an opportunity to reinforce that message during the G20.

'She encouraged Crown Prince to ensure Saudi Arabia co-operated fully with Turkish authorities and worked to bring both investigations to an acceptable close.

There has been widespread condemnation and public outrage over attacks on sites such as school bus and hospitals, where Yemeni civilians, including children, have died.

While at the G20 summit, French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Theresa May have both reportedly had words with the prince.

The US president cancelled a formal sit-down with Mr Putin at the summit in Argentina over Moscow's seizure of Ukrainian vessels. The two leaders are controversial figures at the summit.

A White House official confirmed the two exchanged pleasantries during a leaders' session.
