MAGA IN MISSISSIPPI: Trump-Backed Candidate WINS BIG in Mississippi Senate Race

Republican wins US Senate runoff in Mississippi

Republicans managed to hold onto Mississippi's US Senate seat after incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith easily defeated her Democratic challenger, Mike Espy, by decisive a margin of eight points.

The weeks between Election Day and the runoff election were fraught with controversy for Hyde-Smith, as she was forced to answer questions about a controversial "public hanging" comment and a joke about making it more hard for liberal college students to vote. She also told supporters that she'd be "on the front row" if one of her supporters "invited me to a public hanging".

President Donald Trump endorsed Hyde-Smith and rallied for her after the comments became public.

She is the first woman to hold a Senate seat in the state - and is now the first woman elected to the Senate in Mississippi.

"To the lawless caravans and illegal trespassers marching toward our border, it is very simple: Turn back now, go back home, we will not let you in", Trump said.

Espy's campaign argued that Hyde-Smith's "toxic comments" were an embarrassment to MS and could scare away economic investments.

Hyde-Smith, 59, is the first woman elected to Congress from Mississippi.

Hyde-Smith and Espy squared off in Tuesday's runoff after a November 6 special election in which two other candidates, including anti-establishment conservative Chris McDaniel, were defeated. My feelings on her are best expressed by the above video, ' wrote a pregnant Schumer, who in the accompanying video could be seen vomiting. McDaniel's narrow loss in a primary runoff, after he had received the most votes in the initial round of voting, fueled conservative anger at the Republican establishment and became a rightwing cause célèbre for years afterwards.

The comments by Hyde-Smith, who is white, made Mississippi's history of racist lynchings a theme of the runoff and spurred many black voters to return to the polls on Tuesday. Espy would have been the first African-American elected from the state since Reconstruction. And it was revealed that she'd attended a private high school that was created to avoid desegregation - and sent her daughter to one as well.

It would not be business as usual for Democrats to celebrate a Republican victory, but with the special circumstances involved, a neutral observer might wonder why the left is not cheering for the GOP today.

Hyde-Smith is a former state agriculture and commerce commissioner who was appointed in April by the state's governor after the sudden retirement of Republican Senator Thad Cochran for health reasons. Unfortunately for him, the African-American vote did not come out in large enough numbers to give him an upset victory, and he did not score well enough among white voters.

Hyde-Smith called her suppression comment a joke.

Espy, an attorney, said: "I found out later that this guy, the president, was a really bad guy". He was tried and acquitted on 30 corruption charges, but the Mississippi Republican Party ran an ad this year that called Espy "too corrupt for the Clintons" and "too liberal for Mississippi". She accused Espy of twisting her words for political gain.
