Special counsel Robert Mueller filed a complaint Monday alleging that former Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort breached his plea deal by lying during his interviews with prosecutors.

The representatives for Special Counsel Mueller did not detail what they believe Mr Manafort lied about.

Special counsel Robert Mueller claimed that Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign manager, lied to prosecutors after striking a plea deal, and requested that he be sentenced for his crimes. He was convicted by a jury in August on tax and bank fraud charges in the other case in Virginia.

Since September this year when he took a plea deal in return for reduced charges, Mr Manafort has been cooperating with Mr Mueller's inquiry.

The move signals a return to the acrimonious relationship Manafort has had with the special counsel's office since his indictment previous year.

Both the special counsel and Mr Manafort's legal representatives asked the court to set a date for sentencing.

As part of his plea deal, Manafort admitted to committing a host of money laundering and foreign lobbying crimes and fraud, giving the federal prosecutors ample leverage over him.

"He believes he has provided truthful information and does not agree with the government's characterization or that he has breached the agreement", Manafort's lawyers said in the same filing.

Mr Trump denies any campaign collusion and calls the investigation a political witch hunt.

Manafort, who has remained in jail throughout this, has met with prosecutors at least nine times but Monday's filing indicates that - despite those hours with him - investigators may not have been able to garner any information they could verify.

As part of his plea agreement, Manafort pledged to "co-operate fully, truthfully, completely, and forthrightly" with the government "in any and all matters" prosecutors deemed necessary.

Manafort's plea agreement was supposed to cap his prison sentence to 10 years. He had been in the room for the Trump Tower meeting with Russians who touted they had incriminating information about Hillary Clinton; he had allegedly offered private briefings on the campaign to a Russian oligarch to whom he was indebted, according to The Washington Post; and he had overseen the Trump campaign in the months when Russian military intelligence allegedly hacked Democratic Party officials. The defendant agreed to cooperate with the prosecutors in the ongoing probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
