While the organizers almost called it off, they chose to go ahead with the parade, which made its trek through Manhattan Thursday morning.

"Get ready for an incredible parade, but put on every layer you have in your household, wear every glove you can find, every scarf, hand warmers, whatever you got, you're going to need it tomorrow", de Blasio said.

"We like to be able to debut the best of Broadway, but we also like to show those viewers what they want to see", she said.

John Piper, vice president of Macy's Parade Studio, told us last night, "Every time we come to an intersection, we're going to make sure it's clear so we never stop in an intersection, then as we go through, we move to the windward side and come out and straighten up again". Diana Ross, John Legend, Martina McBride and the Muppets from "Sesame Street" were scheduled to perform, and the city of NY, concerned about frostbite, issued an advisory to spectators to ensure they were adequately dressed for the brutal weather. According to the musical's producers, this is the first LGBTQ kiss in the parade's history.

The New York City parade has been an annual tradition since 1924.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill said thousands of officers were stationed along the parade route. They include counterterrorism teams with long guns, plainclothes officers mixed in with the crowd and a new squad of K-9 teams that can sniff out explosives from a few hundred feet away.

The parade features about 8,000 marchers, including high school bands from across the country, and two-dozen floats culminating with the arrival of Santa Claus.
