Pompeo described the planned second meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and DPRK top leader Kim Jong Un as a chance of making a "substantial breakthrough" in the denuclearization on the Korean peninsula.

Recently, officials from both the countries made trips to North Korea and Russian Federation, leading to speculations that Kim is planning to embark on a visit to Russian Federation in November or December and meet Putin.

Washington, Nov 6 US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be travelling to NY on Thursday to meet with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Chol. The statement did not give a reason why the meeting was called off.

Similarly, Trump, through a public letter on May 24, canceled his first summit with Kim Jong-un, which was in the works for June 12 in Singapore, blaming "open hostility" in Pyongyang's rhetoric.

Pompeo was supposed to travel to NY on Thursday to meet with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Chol.

Kim Eui-kyeom, the Blue House spokesman, said in a briefing Wednesday, "I don't believe that the postponement [of the high-level talks] means that the North-U.S. negotiations have become null or lost momentum or direction".

The president said Sessions' chief of staff, Matt Whitaker, would replace him for now, with a permanent replacement coming later. Sessions, a former senator from Alabama, resigned at the president's request, according to the New York Times .

"We're in a pretty good place right now".

Diplomatic sources told CBS News reporter Kylie Atwood as recently as Monday that senior State Department officials were still confident in the plans for Pompeo's now-delayed meeting in NY. "We're not going to be driven into artificial timelines".

In a wide-ranging news conference after congressional elections, Trump said he was willing to accede to North Korea's key demand of easing sanctions "but they have to be responsive to us".
