Boeing Jet Crash Lands At Guyana Airport 6 Injured Minister

A Fly Jamaica Boeing 757 airliner heading for Toronto made an emergency landing at the Georgetown, Guyana global airport after the pilot reported problems with the plane's hydraulic system.

It said Flight OJ256 "suffered an accident on landing", but had no other details on the nature of the accident.

St. Lucia News was reporting that six people were injured in the incident, but were stable and being treated at the Diamond Regional Hospital in Georgetown.

St. Lucia News also there were 82 Canadians on board the flight, which was Toronto-bound.

There were 118 passengers, two children and eight crew on board the Fly Jamaica jet at the time of the accident, Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson said.

A hydraulic problem reportedly forced the pilots to return to the Georgetown Airport, just over 10 minutes after take-off.

Six passengers suffered nonlife-threatening injuries when the plane landed about 45 minutes after it departed Cheddi Jagan International Airport at about 2 a.m. local time (0600 GMT), hesaid.

An airline spokesman said the plane reported a hydraulic failure emergency shortly after taking off.

After requesting an emergency landing, the plane returned to the airport, but overran the runway and crashed into a fence. One of the aircraft's turbines is seen badly damaged after it apparently hit the barrier.

The Airline has since said it is providing local assistance and "will further release information as soon as it is available".

Guyana's civil aviation authority is investigating.

"They have been retrieved and will be sent to the National Transportation Safety Board for decoding", Field said.
