Said White House counsellor Kellyanne Conway, "I don't know that there will be much of an appetite for Democrat lawmakers to spend all of their time, or most of their time or even a fraction of their time investigating, instigating, trying to impeach and subpoena people".

"Dealing a major setback to President Trump's legislative agenda".

US President Donald Trump has called today's midterm congressional elections a "tremendous success", despite his Republican Party losing control of the House of Representatives.

In the House, Democrats picked up seats across the map, ousting incumbent Republican Barbara Comstock in suburban Virginia and sending Donna Shalala, a former Cabinet secretary under President Bill Clinton, to the House in south Florida.

A simple House majority would be enough to impeach Trump if evidence surfaces that he obstructed justice or that his 2016 campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

The non-partisan Cook Political Report is forecasting a Democratic gain of at least 30 seats in the 435-member House.

Forty-three-year-old steelworker Randy Graham said he has mixed feelings: He supports President Donald Trump's move to impose tariffs on some foreign steel and aluminum, but not some of the president's other steps, which he considers anti-labor.

Widely viewed as a referendum on Trump's presidency, Tuesday's results offered a split decision that revealed deep tensions in the American electorate - distances that could easily widen during two years of divided control.

Early Wednesday, Trump declared on Twitter: "Now we can all get back to work and get things done!"

Midterm elections are typically hard for the party in power, but the GOP's hold on power was further weakened by an unusually large number of retirements as well as infighting between conservatives and centrists over their allegiance to Trump.

The Republicans held on to the Senate and narrowly survived a number of big individual races, including in Florida.

Other highlights of the night included a tag-team between Nicki Minaj and Little Mix on their new single "Woman Like Me", and Hailee Steinfeld and Jason Derulo also taking to the stage.

But Democrats are on course to win the House of Representatives, which would deal a blow to the president's agenda.

Democrats could derail Trump's legislative agenda for the next two years should they win control of the House.

Former vice president Joe Biden, often touted as a possible Democratic candidate to take on Trump in 2020, said he'd be "dumbfounded" not to win the House.

Pelosi said the election Tuesday was about more than Republicans and Democrats.

Another group that came out in large numbers on Tuesday was that of immigrants, who also mostly favour the Democrats.

The governor focused much of his campaign on his opposition to President Donald Trump and Trump's policies, and he continued that in his victory speech, at times addressing the president directly, saying NY is not "buying" what Trump is selling.

In midterm elections two years after he won the White House, Trump and his fellow Republicans expanded their majority in the US Senate following a divisive campaign marked by fierce clashes over race, immigration and other cultural issues.

Political observers had a close eye on Georgia, where Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams was running to become the country's first black female governor, and Republican Karen Handel's race was expected to serve as a bellwether for the direction of the House.

Democrats did succeed in holding on to Sen. Republican candidates in some of the country's most competitive races gambled by tying themselves to Trump in a bid to turn out voters. He played to his base, but his over-the-top rhetoric turned off so many people that Democrats managed to retake the House.

The magnitude of the Democrats' gains in recapturing a majority in the House of Representatives is "not a miraculous achievement", he added.
