Voting underway as Donald Trump faces litmus test

US midterm elections

US midterm elections

Democratic candidates flipped seats in several suburban districts outside of Washington, Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago and Denver that were considered prime targets for turnover because they were won by Hillary Clinton in 2016.

He estimated turnout would reach 45 percent; that would be the highest for a midterm election in 50 years.

Democrats began to scent a big night in the U.S. midterm elections Tuesday with early results pointing to them seizing the House of Representatives from the Republicans in what would be a dramatic rebuke to President Donald Trump.

If Democrats want a blue wave to crash down on Republicans and roll till 2020, they must talk about things they can do to improve the lives of their constituents rather than vilify US President Donald Trump, analysts told RT.

Mr. Trump called Mrs. Pelosi just before midnight to congratulate her and acknowledged her calls for bipartisanship, a Pelosi aide said.

With a House majority, Democrats will have the power to investigate Mr Trump's tax returns, possible business conflicts of interest and allegations involving his 2016 campaign's links to Russian Federation.

Mr. Trump had vacillated on how much blame he would shoulder for ceding the House.

That was during Republican President Ronald Reagan's first term, when turnout among Democrats rose at twice the rate of increase among Republicans, according to Pew Research Center, resulting in a net gain of 26 seats for Democrats in the House. Moscow denies meddling and Trump denies any collusion.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said Americans have "had enough of division", declaring: "Tomorrow will be a new day in America".

"When we can't find that common ground, [we will be] standing our ground", she added. But now the Democrats are harnessing military patriotism too.

Most Democratic candidates in tight races stayed away from harsh criticism of Trump during the campaign's final stretch, focusing instead on bread-and-butter issues like maintaining insurance protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions and safeguarding the Social Security retirement and Medicare healthcare programs for senior citizens.

The White House has been stressing the historical headwinds it faced: In the last three decades, 2002 was the only midterm election when the party in office gained Senate seats.

USA citizens will vote to select their preferred members of Congress, both for the House of Representatives and for the Senate, as well as state Governors and down-ballot positions such as local representatives and judges.

At times tonight, I was playing really well. "But for my fans to get into the match, I also have to play some good tennis". Khachanov won the first set after breaking Djokovic's serve at 5-5 in the first set.

Rep. Maxine Waters, who has urged people to get in the faces of Trump administration officials in public could become chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

Republicans, meanwhile, picked up at least three Senate seats in Missouri, North Dakota and in, and were poised to win a fourth in Florida.

Some of the campaign's biggest Democratic stars lost. The deeply conservative state features a strong challenge by Democrat Beto O'Rourke to unseat U.S. Senator Ted Cruz. They also suffered a stinging loss in Florida, where Trump-backed Republican Ron DeSantis ended Democrat Andrew Gillum's bid to become the state's first African-American governor.

In gubernatorial races, Republican Kris Kobach, a Trump ally, was beaten by a Democrat in Kansas.

Democrats also captured governorships in Michigan, Illinois and Kansas. The President framed the election as a choice between what he has described as Republican law and order and a Democratic "mob" and spoke extensively about immigration and securing the border in the final days of the fall campaign season. First, potential voters favor Democrats by 8-9pp in socalled generic ballot polls.

Democrats turned out to register disapproval of Trump's divisive rhetoric and policies on such issues as immigration and his travel ban targeting several Muslim-majority countries. "We know more women will be going to Congress. and there will be sisters waiting for them who will lift them up".

"Dealing a major setback to President Trump's legislative agenda".

Democrats could derail Trump's legislative agenda for the next two years with control of the House.

Early exit polls showed Trump was a major factor for almost two-thirds of voters who cast their ballots, while a CBS News poll found that 55 percent said they disapproved of the president's performance.

Failure would leave them unable to check president Trump's power. While pleading with voters to stop Democrats, he also hinted he will find ways to cooperate. And they would claim subpoena power to investigate Trump's personal and professional shortcomings.

Given this composition of the electorate, not surprisingly, more voters reported having a favorable opinion of the Democratic Party (49 percent) than the Republican Party (43 percent).

"I think that's the moment that has probably helped him in some cases", Ms Sanders said.
