Trump sparks outrage with ‘racist’ immigration ad ahead of midterm elections

Trump Tweets Controversial Video of Immigrant Cop Killer

Writing in the Washington Post, conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin scalded GOP leaders for standing by while President Donald Trump ramps up anti-immigrant hysteria and racism, before calling out the Fox News network for acting as his megaphone. Retiring Republican Sen. Jeff Flake called it "sickening". CBS News is not posting the video here because of the language used.

On the same day Trump tweeted the Bracamotes video, he also posted a similar campaign-ad styled video on his Twitter feed with a hashtag #JOBSNOTMOBS.

Then a segment from Fox News shows a correspondent interviewing a man identified only as "deported immigrant in caravan", who through a translator, requests to be pardoned for attempted murder.

Bracamontes, who grew up in Sinaloa, Mexico, entered the USA illegally in 1993 at age 16 and Democrat Bill Clinton was president, according to the Sacramento Bee. "Democrats let him into our country", the ad flashes.

The new Trump ad is, inevitably, being compared to the notorious 1988 "Willie Horton" ad released by a PAC that supported the presidential campaign of then-candidate George H.W. Bush.

The government, through these consultations, places its assessment on issues and suggests possible solutions. It added that the government has "never made public the subject matter of those consultations".

Horton was a convicted murderer who went on a crime spree while on furlough from prison under a program supported by Dukakis, then governor of MA. As Massachusetts governor, Dukakis supported the furlough program.

Now, Luis Bracamontes' menacing smile has abruptly taken a central role in Trump's closing midterm election argument about immigration as the president tweeted out a video of the Latino man's courtroom appearance in what was immediately denounced by some Democrats and Republicans as a racist campaign tactic. Reporter for the Daily Wire, Ryan Saavedra tweeted that Democrats would "look like fools" if they appeared to be defending criminals like Bracamontes by attacking Trump over the ad. As of Thursday morning, it had received 2.65 million views in less than 24 hours.

Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, called the new ad the "dog whistle of all dog whistles".

The video stood in stark contrast to an ad circulated by the Trump campaign earlier in the week that highlighted rosy economic numbers and depicted gauzy scenes of American suburban life.

"This is distracting, divisive Donald at his worst", Mr Perez said on CNN. "This ad, and your full approval of it, will condemn you and your bigoted legacy forever in the annals of America's history books".
