Nikki Haley: Trump asked if I was ‘Indian’ like Elizabeth Warren

That's not good enough for some critics, most prominently Trump, who in utilizing his remarkable talent for turning schoolyard slurs into political ammo against his rivals dubbed Warren "Pocahontas", after the Native American woman in colonial Virginia whose memory deserves better treatment than this.

For her part, even if her attempt to end the public discussion of her background has had the opposite effect, Warren is at least using the opportunity to clarify the remarks that first got her into this mess - back in law school.

But I don't claim to be Native American.

"For a senator, in this context, on this ongoing back-and-forth political fight, to talk about DNA", he said, "it really undermines tribal interest, frankly".

In fact, Trump did promise $1 million, during a July rally, but only if the test showed she was "an Indian".

A DNA test showing that Sen.

"Pocahontas (the bad version), sometimes referred to as Elizabeth Warren, is getting slammed", Trump tweeted of his potential 2020 challenger.

In my experience, as a 100 percent white person who's spent three decades around Native people-who, also in my experience, usually refer to themselves as American Indians, or simply, 'skins-Natives are amazingly tolerant of the wannabes. "And Trump can say whatever he wants about me, but mocking Native Americans or any group in order to try to get at me?"

If only Elizabeth Warren would admit the same. When Senator Lindsey Graham announced he was taking a test to see if his own rumoured Cherokee ancestry could "beat" Ms. Warren's, it proved a point made by Kim TallBear: This whole situation is about "settler state electoral politics", and nothing else. One Native American journalist, Jacqueline Keeler, said that Warren's use of DNA as evidence reinforces the idea of Native Americans as a race and thereby undermines their claims of citizenship in sovereign nations. Warren's 1/1054th, or whatever it is today, would certainly not allow her on the Cherokee Nation tribal rolls, which she has acknowledged. She is more impactful and useful if she acknowledges the privilege that comes from being White and advocates to dismantle the systems that sustain the oppression of some over others.

The nation's 573 federally recognized tribes do not have a single standard for determining membership.

Allowing herself to be listed as a "Native American in federal forms filed by the law schools at Harvard University and University of Pennsylvania where she worked". The report indicates she had a Native American ancestor between six and 10 generations ago.

Mullin is one of two Native Americans who serve in Congress. Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) is a member of the Chickasaw Nation. Yet, the university was more than happy to tout Warren among their growing diverse faculty in the 1990s.

"I know what it is, and I'm not going to hide it", said Warren. If someone is compelled to explore their Native American family ties, they need to understand what DNA tests can tell them, be clear about what's driving their quest, and consider becoming an ally of and advocate for Native American tribes and communities. They'll cover for Warren fibbing about her ancestry. I wish I had been more mindful of that distinction, ' the Massachusetts Democrat said Wednesday. It came across as an effort to prevent Trump from defining her and introducing herself to Americans on her own terms if she decides to run for president.

The desire to "belong" to something that isn't part of your heritage is so strong in some politicians who apparently can't live with the fact that they were merely born white. "I have a feeling she will say no but we will hold it for the debates".
