Panovich: Hurricane Michael will bring heavy rain to the Carolinas

Hurricane Michael passed through western Cuba on Monday evening and is projected to hit Florida's Panhandle on Wednesday afternoon.

Michael was lashing western Cuba on Monday with heavy rains and strong winds. A storm surge warning was issued for Florida's Gulf coast from the Okaloosa-Walton County Line to Anclote River.

The 11 a.m. advisory for Hurricane Michael shows it is up to a 110-mph Category 2 hurricane - one mile below a Category 3.

The clockwise churn of an area of high pressure centered over DE is what's keeping Michael on a more northerly path toward the Panhandle and away from South Florida, said AccuWeather senior hurricane expert Dan Kottlowski. "Today is the day to get a plan, because tomorrow could be too late".

The storm's track and strength are still uncertain, but eastern Virginia could see rain as early as Thursday night, NWS meteorologist Jeff Orrock said. According to the hurricane center, hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center of Michael, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles.

In a Facebook post Monday, the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office said no shelters would be open because Wakulla County shelters were rated safe only for hurricanes with top sustained winds below 111 miles per hour.

LESLIE continues to spin in the central Atlantic where it will stay, as it is now moving farther off to the east.

Parts of Florida's marshy, lightly populated Big Bend area could see up to 12 feet (3.7 meters) of storm surge, while Michael also could dump up to a foot (30 centimeters) of rain over some Panhandle communities as it moves inland, forecasters said.

A life-threatening storm surge has been predicted along Florida's Gulf Coast, along with risky winds and heavy rainfall.

Unlike Florence, which ravaged the eastern Carolinas only three weeks ago, Michael is expected to move rapidly once it bores inland to Georgia and SC.

"Let me be clear, Hurricane Michael is a monstrous storm", Florida Gov. Rick Scott said during a media conference Tuesday morning.

President Trump has approved Florida's declaration of emergency. Residents in these areas should follow advice given by local officials, and keep tabs on live updates, which are available from CNN.

Isolated tornadoes are possible overnight Wednesday in southern Georgia which is under a tropical storm warning.

Scott also activated 500 National Guard Troops in advance of the storm. Look at Cedar Key, six to nine feet, down towards Crystal River, four to six feet. But the surging seawater could also create perilous problems far from the coast, raising rivers and bays to unsafe levels as it pushes as much as 10 to 15 miles inland.

A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for.

Tens of thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate in Wakulla, Gulf and Bay counties. The storm is expected to strengthen as it moves through the warmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Since the Sunshine State has been battered by so many hurricanes, including the destructive Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Floridians are better prepared to handle flooding than virtually any other state.

The storm is expected to make landfall on Wednesday.

.

The consulate has posted the warning on its official Twitter account that UAE residents living in NY should exercise caution and stay tuned to local news for safety instructions and evacuation procedures.

The storm was expected to bring up to 30cm of rain with storm surges up to 3.7m, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

Peaton says he's working closely with the National Weather Service to provide accurate information and protective measures to his county, which faces the Gulf of Mexico and is especially vulnerable to any flooding produced by Michael.
