Toyota announces new recall of 2.4 million hybrid cars

Toyota is now in the process of recalling around 2.4 million cars worldwide over fears that a faulty component could cause some vehicles to stall without warning.

The recall covers vehicles produced between October 2008 and November 2014.

In a statement, Toyota said some vehicles could fail to enter a "failsafe" mode in the event of a fault with the hybrid system, which could cause vehicles to lose power and stall.

"If this occurs, the vehicle could lose power and stall".

After reaching out to the vehicle giant, Toyota told us that customers affected by the recall will be contacted directly to alert them of the problem.

They said that power steering and braking would still work but stalling at a fast speed could increase risks of a crash.

The Japanese auto-maker issued a massive recall of over 2.4 million of its popular hybrid line, Toyota Prius.

ECU graduate student of health and communication, Hunter Roberts said she was representing the campus LGBTQ organization. "Basically, I sort of rotate my girls".

To fix the problem, Toyota will update software in the vehicles.

This comes just a month after another recall affected one million similar cars. In November 2017, Toyota recalled the 2012-2015 Prius Plug-in for fuses that could similarly shut down the entire vehicle while driving.

"There have been no incidence of injury or accident in Australia because of the fault", a Toyota spokesperson told 9NEWS. About 1.25 million of the cars are in Japan and 830,000 in North America, he said.

It's thought that vehicles sold in China, Africa, Oceania and other regions are also affected by the recall.

Prius hybrids can stall without warning due to a software error that won't detect powertrain problems and correspondingly won't place the auto in a "limp home" mode that restricts speed.

In 2016, it announced the recall of 3.37 million vehicles globally over problems with airbags and a fuel emission control unit.
