Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill on Thursday

In a raucous campaign-style rally in MS on Tuesday night, Donald Trump mocked Dr Christine Blasey Ford, who in wrenching testimony before the Senate judiciary committee last week said that the supreme court nominee Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will once again be the scene of a national drama Friday as its members prepare to vote on President Donald Trump's embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh, whose Senate confirmation has been thrown into doubt by the accusations, has denied the claims by all three women.

At a news conference on Monday, President Donald Trump decried what he described as "trauma" inflicted upon Kavanaugh, but nevertheless said he wants to see the FBI "do a very comprehensive investigation".

The problem, of course, is that is all anti-Kavanaugh theorizing. It was not immediately clear if Kavanaugh dropped out due to anticipation that he would be serving on the Supreme Court.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky jokingly called the news story a "bombshell".

What she has said: "It is important to have a fair process for the sake of both Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford, as well as the integrity of both the judicial branch and the Senate confirmation process". Vice-President Mike Pence would break any 50-50 tie in Kavanaugh's favour.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, considered a key swing vote on the nomination, believes the scope of the FBI's investigation should include allegations brought by a third accuser, Julie Swetnick, but the senator is deferring to the FBI itself on who should be interviewed, a spokeswoman said. Senate Republicans have privately expressed similar sentiments.

During remarks on the Senate floor, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said last week's hearing, at which Christine Blasey Ford alleged a drunken sexual assault in the early 1980s, left him and others with great concerns about Kavanaugh's truthfulness. The president said it is "scary" because "you can be (found) guilty of something you may not be guilty of". What if Kavanaugh got drunk, attacked Ford and later didn't remember that he did it?

Michael R. Bromwich, one of Ford's lawyers, called it a "a vicious, vile and soulless attack" in a post on Twitter.

A woman, Kathryn Mayorga, filed a lawsuit last week against the Portuguese athlete, saying Ronaldo coerced her into signing a settlement and nondisclosure agreement about an alleged assault in 2009, reports CNN.

Clune said he is concerned that the bureau "is not conducting - or not being permitted to conduct - a serious investigation".

Prof Ford has testified that Mr Kavanaugh assaulted her as a teenager.

Mr Trump told reporters at the White House: "I say that it's a very scary time for young men in America when you can be guilty of something that you may not be guilty of".

The Senate confirmation hearing is not a trial, noted Mitchell, but she said she provided her assessment based on a legal context.
"I thought her testimony was very compelling and she looks like a very fine woman to me, very fine woman", he said.

Murkowski joined other undecided senators who backed Sen.

Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democrats' leader from NY, accused Kavanaugh of delivering a "partisan screed" during the Judiciary Committee hearing last week. A fuming Kavanaugh sparred frequently with Democrats, responding to a question by one about whether he'd ever blacked out while drinking by shooting back, "Have you?" Trump said he is confident the Federal Bureau of Investigation is doing a "great job".

"That's how it has worked for us to cede so much authority and give so much power to the Supreme Court, because people still have faith", Flake said.
