WTA Tokyo Karolina Pliskova upsets Naomi Osaka to win the title

For the fifth consecutive season, Pliskova has now registered 40 wins, as Halep, Kvitova, Mertens and Kerber.

The fourth seed took just 63 minutes to complete a clinical 6-4, 6-4 victory over the newly crowned US Open champion in Tokyo, bringing Osaka's 10-match winning streak to a shuddering halt.

But Pliskova snaffled an early break in the decider and hung on to reach her first Tokyo final, a forehand rocket ending her opponent's spirited resistance.

Wuhan Open organisers confirmed Osaka's withdrawal due to a viral illness on their Twitter page. "Naomi was playing so good all tournament but I think she was a little bit exhausted today". Osaka, bidding to become the first home champion here since Date in 1995, looked anxious throughout the contest and allowed Pliskova to win easily in just over an hour.

The Czech former world number one came into the contest having spent 419 minutes on court this week, more than any other player despite a first round bye and nearly twice as long as Osaka.

"My serve got me out of a lot of trouble today", said Osaka. "Stan is one of the best players in the world and I'm really proud of myself after I could beat him finally".

"I've never been in a final in Japan and the last one is always the toughest". That's normal in semifinals - there's no easy opponents."I think Donna was playing well and she's beaten a lot of tough players this tournament. That's sort of like me playing ahead, but I'm still not 100 percent sure yet".

"Today was the first match that I felt nervous". She finished with 26 unforced errors and admitted to being exhausted after the match.

Former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova stunned Japanese tennis sensation Naomi Osaka in straight sets to capture the Pan Pacific Open yesterday. Klizan went on to take the set. After making the last eight in Hiroshima the previous week to go with similar showings in San Jose, Mallorca and Monterrey - as well as the final in Rabat - the 25-year-old could be set for a big 2019.

Tomljanovic in the semi-finals of the singles on Saturday ousted Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei, who nonetheless made a final, pairing up with sister Hsieh Shu-ying against South Korean duo Choi Ji-hee and Han Na-lae in the doubles.
