Australia joins bid to rescue injured Indian sailor in remote ocean

Abhilash Tomy, a competitor in the Golden Globe round-the-world race, was badly injured during a storm that damaged his vessel and put its mast out of action on Friday as he sailed through a remote stretch of the Indian Ocean.

The yacht was in Australia's search and rescue zone 3,500 kilometres southwest of the Australian city of Perth and 3,000 kilometres southeast of the French island of Reunion, said Australian Maritime Safety Authority search and rescue officer Phil Gaden.

Tomy, a decorated naval officer, was representing India at the Golden Globe Race 2018 (GGR), a punishing 30,000-mile solo circumnavigation of the globe.

Tomy's yacht Thuriya had its mast broken off when it was rolled in a storm on Friday and the yachtsman suffered what he called "a severe back injury".

Meanwhile, the Indian Navy's stealth frigate INS Satpura and tanker INS Jyoti Mission are also racing against the inclement weather to help in the rescue. "There was no way to talk to him after the race began", she said.

At 7.50 a.m. on Sunday morning, an Indian Navy P-8I aircraft operating from Mauritius visually sighted the sailing vessel Thuriya.

Race organisers said the 39-year-old Indian navy commander had been "incapacitated on his bunk". This came just hours after the Navy said that Tomy was safe and he would rescued within the next few hours.

Man City boss Guardiola: Thank-you Aguero
I don't know if he will finish his career here, I don't what's happening in three years, but it's nice to count on him". "I appreciate it a lot so thank you and I'm so happy they can extend their contracts and stay 10 years in the club".

Later, tournament officials learnt that another participant at GGR, Gregor McGuckin boat "Biscay 36 Hanley Energy Endurance" was also dismasted in the same storm. VC Tomy, father of the rescued Commander, said, "We are extremely happy and relieved".

Mr Tomy will be transported to Ile Amsterdam, a tiny island in the southern Indian Ocean which has a small hospital but no airport big enough to take a fixed-wing aircraft. The race, which started 50 years after the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, features yachts like the ones used at that time with no modern technology.

According to GGR's Facebook page, Cdr Tomy went without any food as he lay in the drifting boat, over 1800 miles away from Western Australia coast.

The spokesperson further said that while he was being rescued by the French vessel, an Indian Aircraft was continuously keeping a watch over the boat.

Tomy's yacht is a replica of the Suhaili, which Sir Robin Knox-Johnston sailed in 1968 and won.

An worldwide rescue effort is underway to save a seriously injured solo yacht racer whose vessel is stricken in a remote part of the Indian Ocean, 3,200 kilometres off the coast of Western Australia.
