Blasey Ford's Friend: No Recollection of Party
Ford's husband, Russell Ford, was quoted by the Post on Saturday as saying the thought Kavanaugh could be considered for the Supreme Court after Trump took office troubled her so much that she considered moving as far away as New Zealand.
Lawyer for Kavanaugh's accuser provides letter to Senate Judiciary Committee; Garrett Tenney reports.
A possible witness who Ford said was at the party where Kavanaugh allegedly assaulted her said she has no recollection of attending it.
Democrats have called for the vote on his confirmation to the nation's highest court to be delayed, pending a full FBI investigation, something that Republicans have dismissed as unnecessary.
Dr Ford, a university professor, had originally been granted a deadline on Friday, which later was extended to Saturday, to agree to testify.
The Republican lawmaker said Blasey's allegation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were teenagers wasn't credible because she couldn't remember all the details 35 years later, the Des Moines Register reported. "She should have her say". Meanwhile, Democrats have made numerous attempts to stall Kavanaugh's selection, with the GOP still holding a slim majority in the Senate.
It said she had considered leaving the USA when it became clear Kavanaugh would be Trump's pick for supreme court justice. You'll also recall that the letter from her therapist mistakenly claimed (according to the therapist) that they had incorrectly recorded Ford recounting being attacked by four boys.
Thomas was confirmed after a hearing that infuriated many women who believed the all-male committee mistreated Hill.
Graham, speaking on "Fox News Sunday, ' promised a fair hearing in which both Ford and Kavanaugh "will be challenged" but said 'unless there's something more" to back up her accusation, then he's 'not going to ruin Judge Kavanaugh's life over this'.
Typhoon Mangkhut toll reaches 74 in Philippines
All but six flights in and out of Guangzhou between midday Sunday and 8am on Monday were cancelled, the airline said. A massive evacuation of about 87,000 people from high-risk areas helped lessen potential casualties, officials said.
The previous deadline for resolving the disputes was set at 10pm on Friday but Ford's lawyer, Debra Katz, rejected it as arbitrary and a bullying tactic.
The Judiciary panel's top Democrat expressed fury at Grassley's negotiating position with Ford and maintained Democrats' effort to build the battle into a larger election-year question about the treatment of women. Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, had said a vote would proceed in the absence of a response from Ford's team by the cutoff time.
The order of testimonies is the opposite of what Ford, through her lawyers, has requested, according to a senior congressional source.
One issue that appears to have been resolved in Sunday's hour-long phone call is the committee's refusal to subpoena Mark Judge, the other person Ford alleges was in the room when the assault occurred.
"I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents", Trump said. And so we are left basically with he-said, she-said.
"I have not communicated at all with [White House counsel] Donald McGahn or anyone at the White House, or Judge Kavanaugh, about the topic of the Twitter thread", Ed Whelan said in a brief interview with The Washington Post. She has said that Ford feels rushed and is busy meeting with Federal Bureau of Investigation agents over death threats.
Kavanaugh, 53, has denied Blasey's allegation and will be given the chance to respond to her testimony.
The Senate Judiciary Committee's 11 Republicans - all men - have been seeking an outside female lawyer to interrogate Ford.
