The financial hub of Hong Kong began clearing up on Monday after being battered by one of the strongest typhoons in recent years, with financial markets and offices operating as normal.

"I was insisting because the storm was strong but he told me not to worry because he said they're safe there", said a weeping Felipe, adding that her husband was last seen chatting with fellow miners in the chapel before it was hit by the collapsing mountainside.

The mighty winds broke glasses of commercial buildings, brought down materials from under-construction buildings, uprooted trees and blocked roads.

Fierce winds have already torn off roofs, smashed windows and downed trees in Hong Kong, as authorities warned of the threat of storm surges and flooding from torrential rain.

About five hours after the hurricane signal No 10 - the highest available - came into force for the storm, the most powerful on record in Hong Kong, the barge started taking in water at about 3pm, according to a law enforcement source.

The skyline of the business district is silhouetted at sunset as typhoon Mangkhut is approaching Hong Kong Saturday. All but six flights in and out of Guangzhou between midday Sunday and 8am on Monday were cancelled, the airline said.

Global cruise calls are back on track at Hong Kong after the territory was battered by the worst storm of the year on Sunday with gusts of up to 160 mph/ 257 km/h reported.

Active Shooter Reported Near Madison, Wisconsin

China Southern Airlines scrapped all flights to and from Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Hong Kong on Sunday, and suspended those after midday in Zhanjiang and Haikou, and later than 1pm in Beihai. While the rain had stopped, rising temperatures hampered rescue efforts.

Rescuers have retrieved at least 14 bodies from a bunkhouse buried in a landslide in the mountain town of Itogon in Benguet, the mayor said Tuesday as police, soldiers, and volunteers continue to dig through thick mud for three days now.

Because the landslide destroyed roads going into the area, no heavy equipment has been able to reach the site.

Many of those buried in Itogon were small-scale gold miners and their families who took refuge in a building abandoned by large mining firm. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan left more than 7,300 people dead or missing, flattened villages and displaced more than 5 million in the central Philippines. "Even for a person of my weight, I was about to be blown down by the wind which made me very scared", said a 70-year-old resident surnamed Fung. A massive evacuation of about 87,000 people from high-risk areas helped lessen potential casualties, officials said.

Across northern Luzon, which produces much of the nation's rice and corn, farms were flattened and flooded, with the authorities saying crop losses would likely total more than $250 million.

Gomez reported from Manila, Philippines.
