Sharifs' jail sentences suspended in corruption case, to be released

The National Accountability Bureau is expected to appeal the Islamabad High Court's verdict at the Supreme Court.

Ousted Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law were released from prison on Wednesday, hours after a top court suspended their sentences in a major corruption case that wrecked their political career.

The Islamabad High Court made the decision after the Sharifs petitioned to appeal their sentences, which were handed down by an anti-graft tribunal earlier this year in a corruption case against them.

Sharif was ousted from power past year in July by Pakistan's Supreme Court, after his children were linked to offshore companies in the Panama Papers leaks of 2015.

Sharifs had challenged the convictions through appeals and sentences through petitions and, right now, the court has only heard the petitions and the order is only to the extent of petitions only.

Shahbaz Sharif, who headed the PML-N after his brother's imprisonment, tweeted a verse from the Koran in Arabic that said: "Truth has come and falsehood has departed".

They were sentenced to 10, seven and one year respectively.

Pakistani media reported that the verdict would remain a temporary relief for the former prime minister and his family members until the court gives the final decision on their application seeking suspension of their conviction in the Avenfield case. He faced several court cases at home and was later convicted of concealing assets overseas.

Yesterday, IHC Judge Athar Minallah revealed that the verdict on Sharif's plea in Avenfield Case will be announced on Wednesday (today).

Qureshi further added that Maryam had prepared a forged declaration of trust in a bid to protect her father and the "law of evidence empowers the court to presume facts in certain situations".

At this, Qureshi said that "since the properties belong to a foreign jurisdiction, therefore, it is a distinguished case and these were not applicable to this case".
