No doubts anymore Novak Djokovic has returned to tennis elite

In a battle between two former US Open champions - Juan Martin del Potro won his lone Grand Slam title here nine years ago here - it was Djokovic who prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 on a rainy Sunday with the convertible-topped roof of Arthur Ashe stadium closed.

He also added five United States and two Australian Open titles, plus a solitary French Open crown in 1996.

Novak Djokovic has won the first set over Juan Martin del Potro in the U.S. Open men's final, 6-3.

Williams was fined £13,000 for her meltdown during he US Open final defeat to Naomi Osaka, which saw her issued with three code violations, including a game penalty after calling Ramos a "thief" for docking her a point.

A visit to the court from tournament referee Brian Earley and grand slam supervisor Donna Kelso failed to diffuse the situation and, having led 3-1 in the second set, a rattled Williams lost it completely as she went down 4-3.

Djokovic was the favourite in the match considering the fact that this was his eighth US Open final appearance while for Del Potro, this was just his second Grand Slam final appearance after his historic US Open triumph in 2009. Nadal, Federer and Djokovic last occupied the top three spots in the rankings in April 2015.

Djokovic has appeared to be nearing top form in the second half of the year, and only Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (17) have won more majors than the 31-year-old.

The Serbian has won three U.S. Open titles, and the latest follows up his Wimbledon victory in July.

"I expected, to be quite frank, after surgery that I'll be back on a high level quite fast".

He would take the company to astronomical heights and make it China's major e-commerce website in the years to come. When asked if his retirement could happen as soon as this year, Ma smiled and said, "You'll know very soon".

"I had to kind of disconnect a little bit", said Djokovic.

Del Potro backed Djokovic to surpass Federer's mark of 20 Slams.

But seemingly temporarily distracted by del Potro's supporters getting louder, not to mention the world No. 3's better play, he was broken back for 3-3.

Djokovic's most hard opponent this tournament has been the heat and humidity, so Sunday's cool and wet conditions, resulting in the roof being shut on Arthur Ashe Stadium, were perfectly to his liking. Not against Djokovic, who always seemed to have all the answers - and who said he convinced himself that all of those "Oles" were actually people calling out his own nickname, "Nole".

The game went so long that when it ended, with Djokovic holding to 4-all, spectators began leaving their seats, perhaps thinking it was time for a changeover, even though it wasn't. Del Potro would not rue how many of those could have been his had he been injury-free all those years.

The three-time US Open victor said his hike in France had given him a fresh perspective on life.

While Streep was beside herself, Jerry Seinfeld had more of a skeptical look.

When it ended, thanks to a three-game closing run by Djokovic, he flung his racket away and landed on his back, arms and legs spread wide. 1 and 2, respectively, while Germany's Angelique Kerber climbed one place to 3. "Of course I'm sad because I lose but I'm happy for Novak, you deserved to win".
