North Korea celebrates 70th birthday with parade - but doesn't show off ICBMs

N Korea holds military parade without advanced missiles

Taking to Twitter to celebrate, Trump quoted a Fox News statement that North Korea passed on showing the missiles this year to demonstrate to him "its commitment to denuclearize", something which has been highly suspect at best.

Although North Korea stages military parades nearly every year, and held one just before the Olympics began in South Korea in February this year, Sunday's parade comes at a particularly sensitive time.

Sunday is the 70th anniversary of the 1948 foundation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, as the North is officially known, 3 years after Moscow and Washington divided the peninsula between them in the closing days of the Second World War.

The North displayed its latest missilery in the February parade, however, and Washington hardly batted an eye.

Kim Jong Un presided over a tempered military parade Sunday, in the latest sign that he wants to revive stalled nuclear talks with the U.S.as he pushes for North Korea to rejoin the global community.

Melissa Hanham, a senior research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies said the military component of the parade appeared to be scaled down this year.

A high-ranking Chinese official who is visiting North Korea has conveyed China's President Xi Jinping's personal letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to Chinese news reports. "We will prove everyone wrong!"

According to South Korean President Moon Jae-in's national security chief Chung Eui-yong, Kim had said the withdrawal of US forces had "nothing to do with" the end-of-war declaration promoted by the Pyongyang regime.

"The Chinese Party and government took seriously (our) friendly, cooperative relationship with North Korea".

"(China) hopes North Korea and the United States will implement their common understanding (made) in their bilateral summit and keep to the good trend of peace and dialogue", the Chinese official said, adding that China wants to play a "constructive role" in resolving Korean Peninsula issues politically together with other concerned nations.

North Korean 'spy' charged over NHS cyber attack
These new charges will surely put a hamper on Trump's ability to get in bed with North Korea. He returned to North Korea shortly before the Sony hack , according to the complaint.

Whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended the event has not been confirmed yet.

This year's parade wasn't televised but the state media apparatus filmed it - even using drones with cameras.

Pyongyang now claims that it wants its security guaranteed and a peace agreement formally ending the Korean War in place before it will get rid of its nuclear warheads.

The guide said Kim Jung Un "appreciates attractive women and wants North Korean women to be the most handsome of all".

But that imagery was balanced with flowers and colored balloons, floats on the economy and unification, and spectators waving flags of a unified Korea, Reuters reported.

Soon after the Sunday celebrations end, Kim will once again meet in Pyongyang with South Korean President Moon Jae-in to discuss ways to break the impasse over his nuclear weapons.

Xi said that he and Kim had reached important consensus during their three meetings this year, opening a new chapter in the development of China-DPRK relations.

Both the Mass Games and the military parade have been criticised by human rights advocates and North Korean defectors for the pressure placed on performers and for painting a distorted picture of the country through stage-managed displays.

The mass games performances are expected to continue for the next month or so, with tickets for foreigners starting at just over $100 and going up to more than $800 per seat. He claims to have perfected his nuclear arsenal enough to deter USA aggression and devote his resources to raising the nation's standard of living.
