Seven people were wounded late Sunday in central Paris, France after a man allegedly attacked them with a knife, according to multiple reports.

Seven people have been injured in a knife attack in Paris on Sunday night.

The attack took place just before 23:00 (21:00 GMT) on the banks of a canal in Paris's 19th district.

French police are not characterizing a knife rampage in a popular Paris tourist spot as a terror attack, a French Interior Ministry spokesman told CNN.

"Around four or five balls hit him in the head, but they weren't able to stop him". He fled when several people threw metallic pentaque balls at him.

Two British tourists are among seven people injured in a stabbing in Paris, according to local media.

The man, said to be Afghan, was later arrested.

Who is filling John McCain’s Senate seat?
Ducey said that it is possible that Kyl will resign as soon as the end of this year when the congressional session wraps up. When Kyl joins the Senate, Republicans will restore their 51-to-49 advantage over Democrats for the first time this year.

Petanque players who saw what happened then tried to intervene, throwing metal balls at the attacker.

Four of those injured were reported to have sustained serious injuries, and one remained critical.

Police and ambulance crews arrived on the scene shortly afterwards, witnesses said, and the man was taken into custody.

There have been several knife attacks in France over the past few months, but few have resulted in terrorist investigations.

Police said investigators had "very quickly" dismissed a terrorist motive after the August 13 incident.

On June 17, two people were hurt in another southern town when a woman shouting "Allahu akbar" attacked them with a knife in a supermarket before being overpowered. One was seriously injured.

Paris has suffered a number of militant attacks since November 2015, when a series of coordinated strikes by Islamist gunmen and suicide bombers killed 129 people in the capital, an assault planned by the Islamic State and its adherents.
