Former Trump campaign aide sentenced - and his lawyer blames Trump

Former Trump adviser George Papadopoulos sentenced to 14 days in plea deal with Mueller probe

Papadopoulos was sentenced in a separate legal case Friday to two weeks in prison for lying to FBI investigators about his contacts with Mifsud during the campaign, the first sentence for a former campaign aide as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference.

President Trump mocked the light sentence handed out to George Papadopoulos on Friday as proof there was "no collusion" with Russian Federation, heralding the news "a great day for America".

Friday was his first public court appearance since he pleaded guilty in October, 2017, to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation while the case was still sealed.

He later attempted to use his links to the professor and Russian nationals to attempt to set up a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mueller's team had pushed for a six-month prison sentence, while Papadopoulos' defense had requested probation.

According to Politico's Kyle Cheney, the Papadapoulos' lawyer blamed Trump saying, "The president of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could", citing the president's attacks on the investigation as a "witch hunt" and "fake news". Papadopolous was ultimately sentenced to 14 days in prison and a year of supervised release, fined $9,500 and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service. His sentencing Friday made clear he had barely been a cooperator in the investigation, yet had serious contact with Russia's affiliates in Europe as they tried to lure the Trump campaign.

After Moss sentenced him, Papadopoulos could be seen in the courtroom embracing his wife, whispering into her ear, as reporters and members of the public slowly filed out. "An investigator involved in our efforts to serve him was told Mifsud might be deceased", DNC spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said.

The two also met earlier this year at the Canadian Masters in Montreal, where Stephens easily won the match 6-2 6-2. Naomi Osaka reached her first grand slam quarter-final with victory over fellow 20-year-old Aryna Sabalenka .

In court Friday, prosecutor Andrew Goldstein said Papadopoulos's cooperation "didn't come close to the standard of substantial assistance".

Papadopoulos, who served as a foreign policy adviser to Trump's campaign, has been a central figure in the Russian Federation investigation dating back before Mueller's May 2017 appointment.

Moss said that while Papadopoulos lied for selfish reasons and did real harm to the government's efforts to carry out its investigation of Russian meddling, he was moved by what he called the defendant's "genuine remorse about what he did".

"Caught off-guard by an impromptu interrogation, Mr Papadopoulos misled investigators to save his professional aspirations and preserve a perhaps misguided loyalty to his master".

Told the campaign's priority was to improve relations with Russian Federation, within weeks he made contact with a mysterious professor, Joseph Mifsud, who touted links to the Kremlin. In that testimony, Sessions said he resisted the idea of any Russian Federation meeting proposed by Papadopoulos. "I know some people will think the sentence is light, some may think that it's heavy".

That clashes with what Sessions, a key campaign aide and now Trump's attorney general, told the House Judiciary Committee last November.

The sentence was handed down in a federal court in Washington DC yesterday.
