Tropical Depression Six becomes Tropical Storm Florence

Weather forecasters believe Tropical Storm Gordon will strengthen to a hurricane late Tuesday right as it hits the central US Gulf Coast.

Skies quickly turned dark grey as storms overshadowed Mobile, a port city.

Families along the coast filled sandbags, took patio furniture inside and stocked up on batteries and bottled water ahead of Gordon.

There were no immediate indications that the storm had affected energy operations in the Gulf of Mexico area.

"It was fine, just like a thunderstorm", said Pascagoula resident Trey Casey, who had been given the day off from work in anticipation of more serious damage.

A hurricane watch - meaning that hurricane conditions are possible - was put into effect for the area stretching from the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to the Alabama-Florida border.

Loyola will remain open on Tuesday, Sept. 4 and continue normal operations, despite Tropical Storm Gordon.

"This rainfall may cause flash flooding", the Miami-based NHC said.

Winds of about 70 miles per hour (113 km per hour) were expected to reach hurricane force of at least 74 mph (119 kph) by the time storm reaches the Gulf Coast and some areas still recovering from last year's storms could see 12 inches (30 cm) of rain.

Right now, maximum sustained winds are near 30 miles per hour with higher gusts, according to the NHC.

Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency Monday and said 200 National Guard troops will be deployed to southeastern Louisiana. And residents along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which expected a serious hit, were largely spared.

South Florida was lashed by heavy rain and strong winds from Tropical Storm Gorgon Monday. "Sometimes it starts pushing not only water across but debris, logs and things of that nature, which makes it very treacherous to get across", Mayor Jeff Collier said.

Authorities issued a voluntary evacuation order for areas outside the city's levee protection system. He elevated his house off the ground after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and has food, water and two generators.
