He returned to North Korea shortly before the Sony hack, according to the complaint.

The US charged a North Korean programmer on Thursday with some of the most dramatic global hacking cases of recent years, alleging they were carried out on behalf of the regime in Pyongyang.

The FBI had long suspected North Korea was also behind last year's WannaCry cyberattack, which used malware to scramble data on hundreds of thousands of computers at hospitals, factories, government agencies, banks and other businesses across the globe. The U.S. Department of Treasury also announced sanctions on the same individual.

A month later, United States officials blamed North Korea for the attack, an accusation backed by several organisations, including one linked to the South Korean government.

The department also sanctioned the agency, stating that all property and interests of both Chosun Expo and Park within the US or in the possession of USA citizens must be frozen. These new charges will surely put a hamper on Trump's ability to get in bed with North Korea.

John Demers, the Assistant Attorney General of the National Security Division, said on Thursday that this marks the first time the US Justice Department has formally charged a hacker in connection with cyber crimes "sponsored" by the North Korean government.

A haul of sensitive information on Sony employees was released in what the USA believed was pay-back for The Interview, a Seth Rogen satire about a plot to assassinate Mr Kim.

The two also met earlier this year at the Canadian Masters in Montreal, where Stephens easily won the match 6-2 6-2. Naomi Osaka reached her first grand slam quarter-final with victory over fellow 20-year-old Aryna Sabalenka .

Park is believed to be part of a unit known as the "Lazarus Group", which the USA alleges is also tied to other spear-phishing campaigns, malware attacks, and the attempted theft of documents and money from banks in Southeast Asia and Africa.

United States prosecutors have charged a North Korean man alleged to have been involved in creating the malicious software used to cripple the UK's National Health Service.

In December 2014, Sony was left reeling by a cyber-attack on its film-making studio that exposed five of its upcoming movies, including the big-budget musical remake Annie - released online to file-sharing sites by a group calling itself Guardians of Peace. Asked if any of Park's attacks were launched from China by North Korea, a Justice Department official said, "there's nothing in the complaint alleged on that".

After an impasse of several weeks, President Donald Trump indicated in a tweet on Thursday the talks were moving forward.

"Kim Jong Un of North Korea proclaims "unwavering faith in President Trump".

"This indictment is the result of years of hard work by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice, and it is an important step in making clear to our adversaries that these kinds of criminal activities are unacceptable", Warner said.
