Mueller will reportedly accept written answers from Trump

Rudy Giuliani, one of Trump's lawyers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In the latest back-and-forth between prosecutors and Trump's lawyers, the special counsel's office is reportedly willing to allow Trump to testify in writing about Russian Federation - but wants a live interview about his firing of Comey. The president's lawyers have tried to fight against accepting a formal interview, saying Mueller can use the more than 1 million documents the legal team provided investigators to determine if Trump conspired with Russian Federation. "What are we dealing with this idiot for?'"

"We continue to maintain an ongoing dialogue with the office of the special counsel", Trump's lawyer Jay Sekulow told reporters. In March, Mueller raised the prospect of subpoenaing Trump if he refused to be questioned voluntarily.

Mueller's office had previously indicated that it had many questions for the president on the obstruction issue. But others saw it as just another volley in a 10-month-long legal tussle. The team has argued that the executive has broad powers he is allowed to exercise without fear of prosecution and without risk of being subject to a grand jury investigation.

Trump: "But I had a business dispute with Mueller before that".

The letter was first reported by the New York Times. He wrote then: 'Is Robert Mueller ever going to release his conflicts of interest with respect to President Trump, including the fact that we had a very nasty & contentious business relationship, I turned him down to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation (one day before appointment as S.C.) & Comey is his close friend'.

Madison Keys eased into the quarter-finals of the US Open with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova. That remains Nishikori's best Grand Slam showing. "I definitely think it was a special one, no doubt about it".

"How can you possibly have a man who is that, and then somebody from his law firm came out and said, 'I can't believe they picked Mueller - he hates the president, he hates the president, '" Trump said.

But they have dangled written answers as a possibility, and Mueller's team appears receptive to it as an interim measure.

Contrary to his lawyer's efforts, Trump has continued to insist to them and to aides that he wants to be questioned by Mueller.

And for another, Trump claimed, without any proof that Comey and Mueller are "best friends" and even more, of the "hugging and kissing" variety.
