'Mob rule' rocks US Senate hearing for judge

Democrats expected to press Judge Kavanaugh on his abortion views

The president's comment followed the statements of Democratic senators who warned that Trump was, in the words of Sen.

"I am disappointed that despite his exemplary qualifications and outstanding record, so many of our colleagues across the aisle have announced their opposition even before he was nominated", he said. Patrick Leahy of Vermont. "No one is above the law in our constitutional system", he said. Mike Lee, R-Utah, hold a news conference to refute Senate Democrats who are intensifying their fight over documents related to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's stint as staff secretary at the White House, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018. The passes are for a limited amount of time in order to let in as many people as possible during the course of the day. Democratic senators on the committee also repeatedly interrupted Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Charles Grassley to ask him to halt the hearings and allow time to pore over information contained in a last-minute dump of thousands of documents from Kavanaugh's time in the White House Counsel's Office.

On Wednesday, Kavanaugh backed away from that expansive view of executive power by arguing he was just spitballing about how to protect a president from unnecessary and distracting lawsuits.

Trump said he had been watching the hearings and thought the Democrats were "grasping at straws" in questioning the man he chose to replace retired Justice Anthony Kennedy. "But on major questions of major economic or social significance, we expect Congress to speak clearly before such delegation, and that's what had not happened, in my view, with respect on net neutrality and I felt bound by precedent". Senators Chris Coons (D-DE), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) made salient points. "He's not being very specific", she said during a break in the proceedings.

In citing examples of judicial independence, Kavanaugh mentioned a 1954 ruling ending racial segregation in public schools and a 1974 ruling ordering President Richard Nixon to hand over subpoenaed materials during the Watergate scandal.

"That takes some backbone", he said of the justices who decided those cases.

The first day of Brett Kavanaugh's Senate Supreme Court hearing saw a huge number of protestors, both inside and out of the hearing room.

And Republicans say Kavanaugh's hundreds of public rulings while serving as a judge provide plenty of evidence about the way he would behave as a Supreme Court justice. "I will do equal right to the poor and to the rich", Kavanaugh said.

Both he and Ms Pressley are seen as progressives - but she advocated for a more "activist" style of leadership. It's important to keep a leader, a fighter, and warrior like Mike Capuano around.

One big reason Kavanaugh is so unpopular may have nothing to do with him personally, and is more about the Republican Party's clear desire to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The obstructionist tactics, while will sure boost some lawmakers' reputations among the increasingly liberal base, may still backfire when it comes to the confirmation of Kavanaugh. But Kavanaugh disagreed and wrote a dissenting opinion.

Kavanaugh also used the same response when he declined to answer a question from Democratic Sen. Tuesday is being devoted to opening statements by committee members, three people chosen to introduce Kavanaugh and, finally, the judge himself. "These e-mails will all be disclosed in 12 years".

"My mom taught me in the first instance, judging is not just about theory", he said.

He told the panel - amid raucous protests inside the room - that civility is important.

Democrats want to see "every single scrap of paper you ever touched" during six years in the Bush White House to get at his role in crafting the administration's interrogation and detention policies, Hatch said. Many are being held as confidential within the committee. "We have not had an opportunity to have a meaningful hearing", said Sen.

Kavanaugh says he didn't have any knowing involvement in the email scandal.
