Trump Blasts Sessions for Not Ordering Justice Department to Ignore GOP Lawmakers’ Crimes

Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized Jeff Sessions, most often via Twitter, calling the attorney general out for his alleged inability to take control over the Justice Department. Instead, it's up to prosecutors to use their best judgment and, above all else, make sure that political considerations play no role in investigative decisions.

Democrats have to flip 24 Republican House seats and keep the 194 seats they now represent to win the majority in November. Collins was charged with 13 counts related to securities fraud and insider trading.

Trump did not name the Republican congressmen, but he was apparently referring to the indictments against Rep. Duncan Hunter of California and Rep. Chris Collins of NY.

While Sessions is known for being one of the first congressmen to publicly express support for then-candidate Trump, a rift between the attorney general and the POTUS has since occurred and appears to be widening.

The US Department of Justice and state attorneys general will meet this month to discuss concerns that social media platforms are "intentionally stifling the free exchange of ideas", the department said on Wednesday. The Hunter investigation began under Obama.

The Justice Department announced the meeting on a day when senators and representatives questioned Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey. But it has drawn fire from a number of critics, including Mr Trump's fellow party members.

"The United States is not some banana republic with a two-tiered system of justice - one for the majority party and one for the minority party".

Trump pointed to the popularity of the two men who faced an easy re-election before being indicted.

Trump once called Sessions an "idiot" to his face during an Oval Office meeting, Woodward reports.

Senator Mark Warner, the committee's top Democrat said, "I'm skeptical that, ultimately, you'll be able to truly address this challenge on your own".

Other critics argue that mid-term elections are not a good reason to delay prosecution. It's the most outrageous and damning proof of Trump's utter contempt for the rule of law to come directly out of his mouth.

Collins has suspended his reelection campaign, while Hunter is running for reelection, alleging political bias by the Justice Department. The courts shall decide their guilt or innocence. "So what I am suggesting is that Jeff Sessions and the President do not have a healthy relationship". Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) also joined in rebuking the president, tweeting, "This is not the conduct of a President committed to defending and upholding the Constitution, but rather a President looking to use the Department of Justice to settle political scores".

Committee members also criticized Google for refusing to send top executives to testify at the Senate hearing, with just weeks before the November 6 congressional elections.
