Talks between the United States and Canada aimed at reaching a deal to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement ended on Friday with no agreement, several USA and Canadian media sources said Friday.

"NAFTA is a three-country agreement", Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said.

With a pledge to resume talks next week, Freeland spoke of progress, of optimism and of her determination to get a deal that's good for Canadians _ a remarkable show of restraint on a day that began with another blast of now-familiar Trump bombast that landed like an anvil on the negotiating table.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that the US intends to notify Congress on Friday that it'll proceed with changes to Nafta with Mexico, and that it remains open to continuing negotiations with Canada.

"One of the things I think we're accomplishing in this agreement is a better deal for Canadian and American auto workers", Freeland said Friday, praising the "rules of origin" agreement between the United States and Mexico to raise the amount of content in a vehicle that is produced in North America and ensure that 40 to 45 percent of the car's content is made by workers earning at least $16 an hour.

Similarly, Canadian officials told The Canadian Press early on Friday that expectations a NAFTA deal is imminent are exaggerated and premature. "It may be by Friday or it may be within a period of time".

The remark, made off the record in an interview Thursday with Bloomberg News, was reported by The Toronto Star.

"We've all had a night to reflect and I'm looking forward to hearing what Ambassador Lighthizer has to say this morning", she told reporters.

"I intend to enter into a trade agreement with Mexico, and with Canada, if it is willing, in a timely manner, to meet the high standards for free, fair, and reciprocal trade contained therein", Trump said in his notification to the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The Toronto Star first reported on the remarks citing remarks it had obtained.

President Donald Trump on Saturday claimed again that Canada has benefitted from unfair trade deals with the United States - a day after candid remarks about his "insulting" posture toward America's ally ignited a firestorm of controversy.

Having sunk the negotiations that he apparently meant to sink anyway, Trump confirmed that he had meant to sink them all along in a Friday afternoon tweet.

On Twitter earlier in the afternoon, he wrote: "Wow, I made OFF THE RECORD COMMENTS to Bloomberg concerning Canada, and this powerful understanding was BLATANTLY VIOLATED". I am used to it.

Canada has been clear about its "red lines" around Nafta, Trudeau said at an event in Oshawa, Ontario.

Canada's foreign affairs minister, Chrystia Freeland, was engaged in NAFTA negotiations for the better part of last week after news broke that the US and Mexico had tentatively agreed to a new trade pact to replace the current agreement.

"We're not there yet", she cautioned. In doing so, she tried to portray her counterpart, US trade czar Robert Lighthizer, as a friend who's also trying to get a deal.

"Our starting positions at the beginning were very far apart". And every time we have a problem with a point, I just put up a picture of a Chevrolet Impala, ' Trump said. My job is to find the deal that works for Canada... "We still don't know the specifics of this trade agreement, or whether it will measure up to the claims of an administration with a bad record of delivering", she said. We are not there yet."Trump has also threatened to enact another round of tariffs on Canada's auto sector if the two traditional economic allies are unable to reach a deal".

"Clearly that's not what the Mexicans and the Americans agreed to", said Leblond.

During his interview with Bloomberg News, Trump discussed other countries as well-saying that he planned to proceed with tariffs on Chinese imports. Freeland said both sides have committed to avoid "negotiating in public" due to the intensity of the negotiations.

"I believe that the Canadian government has put a courageous face on what in effect is, from my point of view, a very unfortunate situation". This is something that we take seriously as a renegotiation. "We are also going to be unequivocal about always standing up for Canadians' rights and Canadians' interests".

President Trump didn't indicate he was distressed when U.S.
