New Mexico Interstate 40 crash in Thoreau leaves 'multiple dead' | Daily Star

At least four people are dead following a crash involving a Greyhound passenger bus and a tractor trailer in New Mexico on Thursday, police say.

"Initial investigations shows that a semi-truck was travelling eastbound on I40 when it blew out a tire".

Most people on the bus, which was headed from St. Louis to Los Angeles, were transferred to local hospitals, authorities said.

The accident, near the New Mexico town of Thoreau, took place around noon (1800 GMT) and closed a portion of Interstate 40, a major East-West highway, local officials said. The driver of the semi-truck suffered non-life threatening injuries, reports said.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it would send 10 investigators to the site.

Part of the side of the bus was torn off, in "an awe-inspiring, bad scene". Numerous seriously injured people were taken to an area hospital.

He said the driver told him that one of his front tires had popped, forcing the truck to veer into oncoming traffic, where it struck the bus.

According to the Greyhound's bus tracker, this bus made a quick stop in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Elk City just two days ago.

NBC affiliate KOB of Albuquerque published a photo showing the semi-trailer on its side and the bus off the road with severe damage to its front left side. It forced the closure of westbound lanes of the interstate and traffic was backing up as travellers were diverted.

New Mexico State Police are reporting serious injuries among the passengers aboard a commercial bus that crashed along Interstate 40.

The crash occurred near Thoreau, New Mexico, near the Arizona border.

A number, 505-722-2002, has been established for family members of passengers, said state police.
