Biden recalled "the sheer joy that crossed his face when he knew he was about to take the stage of the senate floor and start a fight".

"I'm a Democrat. And I loved John McCain", said Biden, who lost his son Beau to brain cancer, the disease to which McCain, 81, succumbed on Saturday.

The service at the North Baptist Church in Phoenix was held for the statesman, former prisoner of war and 2008 presidential candidate after his body was driven in a motorcade from the state capital.

Mourners in black went inside the church, while USA flags and campaign-style placards that read simply "McCain" lined the motorcade route leading from the Capitol, where thousands filed past the senator's flag-draped coffin on Wednesday.

Senior Pastor Noe Garcia has begun the service.

The church service brought to a close two days of mourning for the six-term senator and presidential nominee in his home state.

"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain".

A motorcade then took McCain's body to the airport, where it was put aboard a military plane that flew to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, outside Washington ahead of a lying-in-state at the U.S. Capitol on Friday, a service at the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday, and burial at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on Sunday.

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday eulogized late senator John McCain as an American "giant" whose belief in the soul of the country helped give citizens their confidence and optimism.

Asked about the governor's dilemma, veteran political scientist Dr. Charles Dunn says Ducey could appoint someone liked by McCain's allies in Arizona, but that could anger conservatives since many tea party Arizonans didn't consider McCain a dependable conservative.

Joe Biden wipes a tear away as he speaks during a memorial service for John McCain on 30 August.

But Fitzgerald said that while he and McCain were from very different worlds, they developed a meaningful friendship. They were both "cock-eyed optimists", Biden said, and he would trust John with his life.

Speaking to Mr McCain's wife Cindy, he said: "You were his ballast".

Few returning Republicans have displayed much appetite for taking on McCain's role as a legislator willing to openly challenge the scandal-plagued president.

McCain's body will now travel to Washington D.C., where it will lay in the Capitol rotunda.

Trump hit back, saying of McCain's 5-1/2 years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam: "He was a war hero because he was captured".

That follows a week in which the president has awkwardly tried to avoid the subject of McCain's death, even as fellow Republicans and many of McCain's Democratic opponents, came together to honor his memory.

"I'm going to do what I think is best for the country, using what John taught me about the country", he said.

The memorial was laced with humor and featured a racially and ethnically diverse roster of speakers and other participants.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who is black, talked about his unlikely connection with McCain, a big fan of the state's sports teams.

In death, Sen. John McCain is paying tribute to two things that meant the most to him in life: friendship and the military.

As the hearse made its way along the 8-mile route, people held signs that read simply "McCain" and cars on the other side of the highway stopped or slowed to a crawl in apparent tribute.
